I'm new here too, and I'm amazed at the amount of traffic. If the good guys are this busy, how many bad guys there must be!!

I had a short discussion with on scammer, but since this letter was sent to an e-mail address linked to me personally, I followed the advice of this forum and shut down the conversation.

For what it's worth, here it is:

First, I received the typical NOK 419 letter, which ended:

Quote:
So if this mail is acceptable to you I will like you to send to me the following informations:Pls
1. your occupation.
2. your age.
3. your home address
4. your telephone number/Fax
5. your banking details where the money could be transfer into.
Thank you very much and may the almighty God continue to protect you
and your family.
Rose Terry & Son.
NB: Please treat this as matter of urgency.

Nothing like going straight for the jugular. Banking details on first contact?

I replied:

Quote:
My, what terrible news! Of course I'd love to help!

I'm a cybernetics observer, 40 years old. But why do you need my home
address and phone number?

I'm not sure if I can send you my bank details right away. I need to
look them up. Who can keep all those numbers in their head?

Several days later, I received:

Quote:
Greetings in the name of God.

I am writing to know if you received my mail.Did you received my mail? i am still waiting to hear from you so that i will know what to do.
May the peace of Almighty God be with you and your family.
Remain blessed.
Yours sister in the Lord.
Madam Rose Terry and Son.

I hadn't in fact received the mail. But by this point I knew it was time to stop playing via this account, so sent what I thought would be my last e-mail:

Quote:
Hi Madam Rose Terry.

Before we can continue, I need you to answer a skill-testing question
for me.

What is 209 + 210? And what is the significance of that number?

Thanks!

I was surprised to get a reply:
Quote:
I dont understand your skill test by simple addition it gives 419 ( four hundred and nineteen) but I don't know what the significance is. I have cracked my brain and still not come up with anything, please solve the answer for me please.
Rose Terry

Does this mean I can add "I have cracked my brain" to my sig? Well, maybe not yet.

I finally closed it by saying:
Quote:
Hi Rose.

419 is the number given to the Nigerian statute against the advanced fee
fraud, which is the one you are seeking to perpetuate on me.

And reported the originating e-mail address to Yahoo.

Ok, it's not real scambaiting, but it was a beginning.

@Normal: Great screen name! I've considered my self as a "variant of normal" ever since a doctor said that about a chest xray I had.

Anyway...

I think you should also have congratulated the lad on getting the arithmetic part of the question right, as most lads wouldn't have any idea what you meant. Razz

That "cracked my brain" stuff is him going off script. That's good that you got him to do that so early on. I say get a new addy and re bait him.

Oh and sure add that to your sig Smile

Thanks for the encouragement, folks.

When my wife had to go to the specialist for an ultrasound of our first child, the results were classified as "normal variant." I was fond of the term from that point on.

Now, if only I can figure out how to create a sig.

Unfortunately the practice of shutting down lad email addresses does not carry well here unless they are paid for addies or phonelad addies.

Welcome here, about the addy's.
It takes the lad 2 minutes to get a new one and usually he saves the needed info somewhere else so it's just a minor disruption of his "work".
Now if you leave it alone you can bait him twice or more and really make him love you. If you can have him phone you itís even costing him $$, if you can make him travel youíre a really expensive victim for him as during the time on the road he canít scam and he has to pay $$ to go somewhere. And think, you might be baiting the lad that I just shut down, your work for nothing and you have to do the boring first emails all over again. Thatís why 7/9 (and the whole eater gang) donít like it.
Don't let this stop you we're all learning every day.

Edit: why do you only see the typo's the moment you push send? Smile

Ah, that is good to know about the addresses. I knew enough to not close any addresses I might encounter here, but I didn't think beyond that.

Oh, btw, my lady Rose has replied again, including a tearful letter of how she has been praying (she got my contact from our church's website), a photo of her dead husband (handsome and wealthy gent), her poor soon (with a Calvin Klein belt buckle Very Happy ), her happy and cheerful self (uh huh), and two steamer trunks full of bills that I've seen posted elsewhere on Eater.

I can't bait her from this address (it's a personal address), but maybe the idea of rebaiting from somewhere safe isn't so bad.

Thanks for the advice (and the patience)!

Best reserve a special email account for this fine lady Smile Gmail doesn't leave your Ip# exposed and is safe to use, so is hushmail and lots of others. Read a bit or ask your mentor, but you gonna have to read the stickies one day Smile

Thanks, bill2. Smile

Actually, I've read all (I think all) the stickies. That's why I know not to go further with this identifiable account.

Y'all have provided an amazing resource here in Eater and with the mentoring. Thanks for the good work!
