^^^ Exactly. Many of them are so dogged out at auction that they sell for waaaay less than the lien. They are referred to as "sleds".

The car they confiscated is a 1996 pickup. I don't know what the son did with all his drug income, but he wasn't spending it on anything ostentatious. He continued to work in a low-end job. He was very low-key about it, which is one reason why I never suspected anything. That and the aforementioned fact that it's so damn quiet in this neighborhood, the biggest excitement we've ever seen was when someone posted some flyers looking for a lost cat....

Of course, but I highly doubt that you'll see something on the TV news over there regarding something that happened in Britain. It's normally the other way about, all the most shocking stories come out of America, all the biggest serial killers, drug dealers e.t.c

I'm not talking about drugs in particular, just illegal doings.

Have you ever watched the news here? We do hear about crime in Britain, as well as other news from there. Frankly, I grew sick of hearing about the B3ckhams.

The U.S. has a much larger population, so more criminals. Sad

My brother is a meth cook. He just got out of 5 years at Fulsom, on parole but back to his old tricks. I turned him in the last time because he'd blown up my mother's kitchen twice with his lab. My mother was afraid to call the police because his friends all had guns and she didn't want to get my brother arrested or in trouble with his friends. I brought her to live with me in another state and I've done my best to keep distance from my brother. I actually hope he goes back to prison soon. The next time will be for life.

It's everywhere. They hide where you'd least expect them to be.

Craig, you're surely not serious about saying that all the crime we hear about coming from the USA?? We have our serial killers (Shipman) and drug dealers (there was a massive drugs capture in Glasgow recently!) too! And as you will see from my 'location' I'm also in Scotland.

According to this source, the UK is ranked third for crime behind Germany and the US. But that is by sheer number of reported crimes, and not adjusted for the size of the population or the degree of the crimes.

US has a population of about 300 million people, England is about 50 million. If you divide the total population by the number of recent crimes, you get:
US 12.8, UK 9.8.

From the same source, the US has 560.1 drug offenses for every 100,000 people to the UK's 214.3 drug offenses for every 100,000 people.

Of course the stats are probably a better indicator of the willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence (as stated on the linked page).

If you move to Montserrat you only have to avoid 751 crimes per year.
(Deaths caused by volcanoes are not considered crimes.)

I think it's good that the UK is apparently crime free. Just imagine if there were crime there: we'd have lots of detective stories to deal with.

If crime should ever reach the Island, I have a few suggestions for detective names: Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Lord Peter wimsey, etc.
