I've got a cable internet question. I've currently got a 10mbps down & 2 mbps connection. Since of late, my online gaming has gone to nothing, I do not need all that speed. I'm thinking of downgrading to their "slowest" service, which is 768kb & 256kb up. ($17 vs 42).

Is there a way to throttle down my own Linksys modem to those speeds so I can get a feel for what it would be like at those speeds before doing so?

You might want to take a look at this free program which will limit your bandwidth. http://bandwidthcontroller.com/trafficShaperXp.html

Alternatively you could get a similiar effect by changing your connections QoS figures.

As long as you are not gaming or downloading large amounts of 'data' that should be fine.

What most people think of as speed on the internet is actually a function of latency.

The size of the data pipe, 786k, 1meg, 3megs Etc. has no bearing on the latency of the connection.

However if you are planning on watching streaming video's and such I'd stick with the higher data rate package.
