World homicide figures

Call me a miserable git if you like, but I would be interested to compare the homicide rates of different countries. I searched the internet, but couldn't find any definitve results.

Mainly, the comparison between Scotland and USA, Canada and Scotland and Australia and Scotland.

I'd like to know if I'd have a higher chance of being killed if I emigrated than I do already.

I'm from the Highlands and some of the stories of things that happened locally that I've heard have absolutely shocked me. It wasn't like this in the past, bad drug problems in Scotland, doubt thats helping the stats Sad

I think you should consider all crime, not just the homicide rates. There are also very violent crimes that don't result in death.

Nah, not really. There's the mongrel mob and black power... but all in all it doesn't really affect most people.

That said, Australia is a great place too.

Crime is, unfortunately, unavoidable. But you can mitigate it. We tend to be calmer down here... probably because there's not too much to get worked up over Very Happy

And Tommo's right... homicide stats point to someone you know... like lotta said, I'd be more interested in violent crime stats. Of course... you could move to South Africa... Laughing

^^^I understand Burma is very nice at this time of year. Apparently, you can get shot by complete strangers wearing military uniform...which is always nice. Shocked

Alternaively, you can move to The Midlands and get hit by a mini tornado. My point being is that everywhere and everything carries some element of risk. There ain't enough cotton wool or Band Aids to go round the world, sadly.

If you live your life worrying about statistics, you're never going to feel safe. Throw media sensationalism into the pot and it's any wonder how people ever set a foot outside thier front door these days.

Scotland is no more violent than anywhere else. Sure you have the odd blip, but unless the crime rate is directly affecting you, your family or your friends why give a crap about it?

When you look at statistics, you're looking at a totally unclear picture. For example, the most aggressive city could appear to be an oasis of peace if crime isn't reported. Likewise vice-versa. There are so many quandaries to take into consideration when looking at statistics, it's safer to trust your own instincts and throw all the polls, newspapers and other claptrap into the bin.

It wasn't random violence, it comes back to what we were saying about homicide being committed by someone you know.

That guy is public enemy number 1 in NZ atm.
