Okay. Referencing the locked thread: malicious code is illegal.

419 eater seems to be all about tricking scammers into WILLINGLY doing things that waste their time and resources and in that spirit I present this idea:

What if you provided software and gave them instructions that they need to install software: that includes a terms of agreement that spells out everything that the program does and explicitly states that there is no warranty provided, there is no liability on the distributor's end, and that the program was installed at their own will..

Wouldn't this be legal? Also wouldn't this open up a new window of possibility to actually stop their scamming?

Regardless of legalities it wouldn't make any difference.
Since most (all?) scammers use cybercafes, you'd be doing damage to a machine they didn't own, and this wouldn't bother them. That breaks the third party rule of eater (though perhaps if cafes enforced their no-scammers-allowed rules.. but that's another story).

If you were very specific about the code and it broke only their hotmail (and not anyone elses who uses that machine) then that's different, but firstly you have to be 100% certain it would follow that rule, and secondly it's still legally dubious even if they agree to a disclaimer.

Please take some time and read the forum for a bit to get the hang of what we do here. We do not condone putting any malware on lad's computers. Lads use internet cafes so you would be hurting the cafe owners with these actions.

Viruses wouldn't work, lots of lads work out of cybercafes. You'd just be ruining a developing nations few internet access points for the general public.
I get the idea, but some kind of cyberwarfare wouldnt cut it as many of the lads are just on their own and more organised groups (of the criminal kind) are already attacking sites against them aa419.org is appearantly stricken.
I totally get your point, but its something that can't be machine fought, since we're talking about people contacting people. We shouldnt ever talk about this kind of stuff, really, it brings this completely by the book forum into distrepute, so if you could tone it down, please do so dude.

We waste most of the lads' time (and are thus most effective) when they are not sitting at a computer. Don't try to beat the machine, it is not worth the time or the effort.

Beat the mugu. Make him go out and explore, get him to do tasks for you, have him fill out forms and make fruitless journeys to the bank. He'll simply migrate to another cafe or computer if you damage one. It is pointless and crosses too many boundaries. Use your imagination and writing skills Wink

@churchy -- If you do the math here -- what would hurt them the most? Wasting their time as much as possible or giving them a virus? They can always open a new box or change computers in the cafe.

Lets keep them away from real victims. Make them put out the time and effot dealing with us, rather than real victims. Trust me, to a new baiter, the malicious code/virus seems like a great idea (I even suggested it once Very Happy

) --- but when you have been baiting a while you realize wasting their time is the best thing we can do.

Seriously - - I think the people above have said it all. So on that note, please do read the stickies. Please do sign up for a mentor, and please do find some email addresses of some lads. It's always nice to have new people who are ON OUR SIDE come to the board.

So put down the malicious software and come play the game the way it's been negotiated here. The rules here are the results of several years of scambaiting and several years of ethics being discussed. So, the things we don't do here are not done for a reason. Reading the stickies will help you figure out those reasons. And if you don't understand, the search button will be your friend.

the reason for the underscores is that your terms say to use a new username, and i have a friend who uses juut plain "churchy" and I don't want anything to ever lead back to him.

I did not know about the internet cafes so I guess that my idea is a no go. I was thinking that I could just cause him to lose all his contacts and have to start all over, but I suppose that wont work.

That goes along with killing the lad's email account. It's not helpful at all. It's irritating and causes baiters to lose contact with the lad, who they could otherwise be occupying with other things besides scamming people. Don't for one minute think that a lad would lose his contacts. I have one lad that has been shut down 4 times and will still email me with a fresh scam letter. It only takes a few minutes to open a new email account and a bit longer to move to the next internet cafe.

Why not just waste the lad's time and resources with safaris and stupid pet tricks?

Well, Churchy, my suggestion is to read all the stickies, and WATCH and LEARN from a mentor and from more experienced baiters. Once you have more understanding of what we do (and what we don't do), I think you will realize the wisdom of the responses you are receiving.

I think we encourage people to think outside the box, to come up with new baiting tactics and new modalities to use on the lads. What everyone has been saying is simply that there's either legal issues or pointlessness issues with many of the methods that churchy has proposed.

If a Nigerian forum posting that I recall is any indication, at least one cafe owner tried enforcing "no scammers allowed" rules only to have the local police show up and start threatening and hassling them because the scammer had paid the local police bribes for years and had them well in pocket.

It's not as easy as sticking a sign on the door, even if the owner wants to be a responsible citizen.

That's one reason it's nice to take a few days to read before you post too much. You'll often find that your idea has already been proposed, discussed and (frequently) shot down. Wink

That said, baiters come up with fantastic new ideas and modalities all the time. Don't let your first post discourage you.
