My kid's b-day is coming up.
He'd like an iPod. He'd also like a PSP.
Someone told me that I should just get a PSP then because I could download music and videos from iTunes to the PSP.
Is this true? Which would you suggest to get? |

My nephew was talking about actually saving his pocket money until he had enough to buy a PSP, and then helping his younger brother do the same.
If the PSP can really do both, games and songs, it sounds like the better option.
The only downside is that the PSP has a memory stick which tends to be expensive and limited to what? about 4Gb max size, but that still allows for a load of music files, you could also have a couple in circulation to increase the number.
FAQ from the music bit of their forum

I got a PSP a couple of years ago and it's pretty good, if not kind of expensive.
I don't use iTunes i'm afraid, but it is possible to use the PSP as an music (and video) player and put your own music on there. I think it can handle most music types from .mp3 to .wma .
However depending on which pack you get, you might need to buy a larger Pro Duo Memory stick.
The value pack I think comes with a 32mb stick, where as the Giga Pack comes with 1gig.
Saying that, I got the value pack and bought a 2gig memory stick off Ebay for about 20-30.
So if your son is going to be using it for music and videos it might be worth seeing if its more cost effective in getting a Value pack (and buying a larger Pro Duo Memory Stick somewhere else) or buying the Giga pack.
It's a bit pricey, but the PSP can do quite a lot. |

Thanks! I think this is what I will go with. I just now have to start doing more reading to figure out what the best prices are. I know NOTHING about this system - -but it's cheaper than a Playstation 3! LOL I don't plan to buy that one for a while. My kid has everything else except for the PS3 and a PSP. |

Buy him a football, and tell him to go outside and play when he's done with his homework, and eating his brocolli. Or, to really get into the PSP mood, get him an old car and a shotgun. Guess I better go take a Lorazepam. Forgot it was 2007. |

I don't want to derail, so by all means step over this post, but should kids be carrying around something to school (and yes, whatever you get your nephew, he will if he can) that some smackhead could get a fix off? I've heard of kids getting nintendo DS's stolen on them at school and muggings for ipods from under 12s. Whichever it its, make sure they don't flaunt it too much. I hate sounding like a Fox News Report but that is how it is in a lot of places. |

My kid doesn't take those things to school. He takes them with me when we go to do laundry (we have to put our laundry in a shopping cart and push it to the place to wash it.) Then he will take it when we have to go on trips on the subway or when we are on the airplane. He flies at least 8 times a year (my parents don't like being away from him and constantly buy tickets for him to see them.)
I'm well aware of how people steal here. I try to make my kid look like he's poor as much as I can. However, on the couple occasions when an older kid has tried to bully him - he's "beat the hell out of them" except on one occasion where the kid was 6 years older than him (12 at the time and mine was 6). I was actually outside - and my kid was 2 houses down from me - and this kid just decides to beat mine up. A few months ago, an older kid said he was going to steal my son's house keys. He ran and grabbed the keys. My kid took them back - tackled the other kid - and beat that kid with his keys. Another kid videoed it with a cell phone. I wasn't around for that one - it was right after school.
Kids these days can be mean - luckily my kid is tough - but I do need to get him out of this city before he's a teenager!!!
Oh - he also plays lots of sports - And I took him with me to run 2 miles today. We had to stop and walk some as he's a "fat kid" and couldn't handle running the whole thing. I'm building him up, though. |

Eliza, a PSP definitely a PSP over an iPod
Think of it this way. Would you rather have a CD player or a game system that also plays CDs?
Or hell, get him both |

I don't have a PSP but I have a video Ipod, depends how old he is. I am really starting to grow out of the old hand held video games like gameboy advance and DS's so I preferred the video Ipod. You can run with it easier when exercising.
Oh and don't get a PS3, complete rip off, Xbox360 is so much better, though I still have my ancient PS2 that has taken quite a beating over time. |

Point well made by Reaper. A PSP is not really something you would strap to your belt to listen to music with. But if youre thinking of getting a PS3 in the future then I still say PSP since they sync up together. You can also access the internet from a PSP. As far as videos go you can simply buy PSP movies which play just like a DVD. Although I dont think they make many UMD movies anymore.
Also per my 11 year old both the PS3 and 360 are great. More games with the 360 but the PS3 is still kind of new.

Im 37 and I have one. What are you trying to suggest Does this mean Don is going to start picking on me now? No really I have used it all of ten times in the past year just to sync up with my kid to play doubles. Yeah, it got old real fast. Small screen and a bit small to play with for very long. |

A video Ipod could hold alot more music and video without a memory stick if that is what your after. I have the 80g and it holds more than I can put on it so far. You can also plug it into a TV to watch the movies on a bigger screen. |

just a heads up too - they are coming out with an updated version of the PSP this month. It will have a bunch of improvements so you may want to hold off on getting him one until that one comes out. |

Thanks guys.
My kid is disappointed right now - his XBOX360 has the red circle of death. We just got off the phone with the XBOX company and they are sending a repair box - we have to ship the console to them - they say that it's a hardware failure and that they will fix it for free and also give us a 3 year extended warranty and 1 month of free something online with that thing - but my kid doesn't go online with it.
A new PSP sounds cool! I'll check it out!
Thanks for the heads up! |
