I experienced a "zilzal" in Egypt some years ago; epicenter was in the Gulf of Aqaba, I've been in Gizeh, sleeping in my hotel room. It was a "rattler" according to ParaNoid's definition. Suddenly my bed started moving, and it was a strange feeling, but no damage, no panic there. Only in Cairo a few houses collapsed, but that seems to happen anyway there.

My first earthquake was years ago when I wos on holiday in Cairo - thought the building was going to fall over!!

Although 'beautiful women' and 'Manchester' are probably an oxymoron.

Piemont is a very active region when it comes to seismic hiccups. And pretty women. Unfortunately I slept right through the earthquake 2 years ago and realized it only after my concerned mum told me about it in the morning.

But back in 1994 when I lived in Berlin a WWII bomb exploded on a building site nearby and I distinctly remember thinking "earthquake".

That's funny Don because the only earthquake I experienced was here in suburban Melbourne last year when I heard an enormous BOOM! and instantly thought "bomb" Very Happy

I saw a programme a couple of years back that said these Earthquakes Turkey has been having is a prelude to the biggie, so much so that the Turkish Government has started quietly removing it's important historical artifacts to safer places like the British museum. Turkey is bang on three different fault lines;

and they(the clever rock people) think there's a chance the whole country, or a great deal of it, might disappear into the Med/Caspian/Black Seas. This won't be made public knowledge because of the mass panic that would ensue, but it's coming, maybe in 10 minutes, maybe in 100 years.

I live where the earthquakes don't. I prefer to risk my life in traffic in and out of Philadelphia.

Driving into Philadelphia is like making love to a beautiful woman...you stand around for hours with teasing fits and starts that make you think you're about to get somewhere, only to be slammed back into your seat as someone makes you throw the brakes on. By the time you get to the promised land, you're looking for the quickest way back out.

There is a fault line running through northern Turkey, and sections of it have given rise to big earthquakes in recently years. Satellite images (using synthetic aperture radar, or SAR) can show the amount of stress built up in the land either side of the fault. The epicentres are marching steadily west, towards Istanbul, and the next one will probably be under the Sea of Marmara, which will certainly be felt in Istanbul.

It is worth mentioning that, according to one theory, the Black Sea is only a few thousand years old and may have been formed when an earthquake ruptured the narrow channel now known as the Bosphorus, allowing the Mediterranean to flood the Black Sea basin. However, the chances that large chunks of the country will disappear this time are extremely remote.

Worst I have seen is a 3.3 Here in Virginia! (Mountains got here somehow)

But again I've seen Hurricanes come and go Here as well - There not always still Hurricanes time they get this far inland - but one did make in in 88 or 89 - still as a cat 1.
