I found an article on the old Spanish Prisoner scam in a Reader's Digest compilation on hoaxes and frauds. There's a lot to smile at as there's so much that's familiar - but this little snippet caught my eye; detail from a 1952 scam operating out of NYC, aimed at Latin Americans, and concerning a trunk box of wealth. I've omitted some of the contents that was left unvalued.
Among the contents are: one thousand $100 bills, eight hundred $500 bills, four thousand pounds sterling... a pearl necklace valued at $10,000, a diamond diadem... worth $35,000 [and a] wedding ring, worth $5000... There are two checkbooks on the National Bank of Argentina - one amounting to $16,000, the other to $36,000.
Not including the pounds sterling, that's $602,000 in cash and kind. Here's a question; what would that be equal to in today's money?
