This came up on digg. It's a very interesting site (SFW) that shows how 'peaceful' 121 countries are based on a set of criteria.
http://www.visionofhumanity.com/rankings/
You can click each of the countries for interesting details. |

Australia at 25? I blame NN...
From my experience 83 seems about right for Brasil, but Sri Lanka at 111? Has the internal strife really increased that much in the 2 years since I've been there?
Can't argue with the corruption figure for Nigeria, although I fail to see how they scored better than Zimbabwe in this area. |

^^^ Depends on how they measure it.
By the same token the US must be a crappy place to live... but we all know that for the most part it isn't.
Seems rather bollocksy to me. I grew up in NZ and believe me, it's not as peaceful as some of the other countries mentioned there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongrel_Mob
Peace is simply a semantic... do you measure peace in how often you wage war or how little your life if effected by violence?
If it is the latter, Israel, India and Thailand would probably rate much higher, as their violent crime stats are much lower than other countries. |

US - Adult literacy rate (% of pop over 15) 99% |
So, why does it seem as if the majority of the remaining 1% have to live near me?
Been to two of the top 10, and two of the bottom 10, and a lot of those of those in between. |

^^^ where did you get that stat? www.nationmaster.com also has them at 99%
I've read many places that puts it around 88-92% in reality.

What counts as literacy after all? I've heard that huge chunks of the adult population in most developed countries have literacy problems. |

On the page (link posted toward the top), click on the country's nam and it opens a page with bunch of %age info. If you click on that page on the statistic description, it gives even more info. |
