Go file for unemployment immediately. There is about a 2 week grace period that you will have to wait out. Don't make the mistake of not having taxes taken out of the unemployment check unless you know that you can cover them come tax time. Your benefit amount will be based on your base earnings period which goes back 18 months and as you were there for 6 years you will be fine. The check won't be great (it's based on a certain percentage of your salary), and you will have to prove that you are actively seeking employment, but it's better than nothing. If you had medical then your employer does have to offer you "Cobra" medical coverage but you'll be paying the full price of the coverage.
Keep good records of any expenses that you incur job hunting - from mileage to interviews, phone calls, getting resumes copied, etc. You will be able to claim that money back on your taxes.
Good luck to you. |
