Ever since I joined here I've been curious about something, and I've decided finally to ask a few questions. On the index page for the forum there's an interesting statistic:

Six hundred and ninety one! Holy hell! The most we generally have at the moment at any one time is about 50, including guests. What on earth was going on back in October 2004? Was the forum just super-popular or did it end up with a whole pile of guests for some reason?

Just curious. I know there are a few of you here who were members back then. Come on.... spill the beans.

Yup. We were slash-dotted on that day.

And a pain in the ass it was too. If I recall correctly, the site went down for almost two days recovering.

It did have a good thing though: we went from webspace to a dedicated server after that.

But I had been lurking here daily since early February 2004. I just decided to join up when the pictures forum was put behind a login, which in turn had to do with the /.

I guess it's pretty unlikely we'll ever surpass that amount unless something similar happens again in the future. I assume the typical number of people on this forum keeps increasing over time (if only slowly).

I'm thinking of posting the pictures I secretly snapped of Lotta, Eight, Eliza, and myself doing the naked antler dance...that might draw a crowd...

Looking back in the earlier days of the forums it appears as though guests were able to post. I can totally understand why that changed, I just wonder whether guests were still allowed to post on that crazy day.

I can just imagine how quickly all the threads would have grown....

Nope, as far as I know, guests were never allowed to post. Accounts have been deleted, which puts a guest tag on the posts.

Yeah, deleted due to inactivity. Besides, that amount of relative waste is hard on the database.

Still, I remember that slashdotting, it was what first let me know about scambaiting. Here I am, three years later finally having the gumption to actually try it out or at least join in here, rather than just luring and reading. Smile
