It's next to impossible to pick only three. These are my favorite three of the first ones that came to mind.
Walk This Way - Aerosmith
Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Welcome To The Jungle - Guns N Roses
Honorable mention
Hotel California - Eagles |

Aqualung - Jethro Tull
The intro to Black Tiger by Y&T
Four Sticks- Led Zeppelin
edit: fixed the name of the song. I can hear the tune in my head and was going to look it up, but decided, "Bah! Who needs accuracy?" |

OK. I'll try to provide my top 3 faves but there are so many
Moby Dick (Led Zeppelin)
Space Truckin' (Deep Purple)
Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Iron Maiden)
I've only listed these as I recently listened to them. It's interesting to note the number of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple songs other have listed. |

I noticed that everyone here actually listed riffs instead of solos. Cool idea. Here's a few of mine off the top of my head:
What We all Want - Gang of Four (Andy Gill)
Rebel Rebel - Bowie (Mick Ronson)
New Values - Iggy (Scott Thurston or James Williamson) |

Surprised nobody mentioned Paranoid yet.
Or Whole lotta Rosie
would have thought they were 2 of the most recognisable.
If we're getting into solo's:
Comfortably Numb. |

Favourite solos...
Blackmore's solo in "Highway Star" on Deep Purple's "Made In Japan" live album. Much more impressive than in the studio version.
Eric Clapton: Let It Grow
Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing |
