So does that mean he is in BF? Or could he actually be near Cameroon as he says. He has no reason to lie at this point. He is already clearly on safari. I tend to believe him as he has not yet told me a lie. Not to say that is impossible.

Just trying to figure this out- I am not questioning you guys. It looks like that provider may have a very wide range?

More great news folks! He says he is now in Cameroon. His IP is the same satellite provider as before, so that doesn't help me narrow down anything.

This is classic. Public transportation is a nightmare in Central Africa. This guy is gonna take days to get to the cave.

What's his IP this time? His old 193.220.48.98 was from ALINK Telecom Burkina Faso via Taide sat. If the new IP is from the same range then he lies and that would also explain his geographic knowledge.

TFI- His IP was the same as before.

However, if I understood Thud's post before, this IP, even though it comes up as Burkina Faso, it seems that indeed it is not Burkina Faso.

Check this- his IP when he claimed to be in Naimey was 196.28.242.14. When you run the check it gives you the locale as Burkina Faso. However, if you look at the map that it shows, it showed Naimey as the location. He had an from Mali before that, which is right near Niger.

My suggestion was this- if that satellite provider was indeed for a large portion of the region, then is it possible that the IP would stay the same? I ask, because I don't know. It just seems odd that he would travel through Burkina Faso, when he was in Naimey. Again, I am no IP expert. If you could shed light on this, that would help. I am not naive to think my mugu wouldn't lie to me. Evil or Very Mad

I guess I do hope that he is still telling the truth and hasn't given up. Using public transport seems a bit crazy, it's almost like he's laughing at how impossible his trip is.

I am curious to see how this develops, and to see him move onwards a bit more.

I think he's stopped. Unless he's got his own laptop I don't see how the IP addresses could be the same on two cafe computers in different countries except by extreme luck. It's the computer (actually the NIC) that gets the IP address, not the email account. In fact I don't think he'd keep the same IP address unless he had his own satellite dish, and maybe not even then.

Caveat: I don't fully understand satellite comms, so I stand to be corrected, but I don't expect to be.

I think he gave up when his friend refused to fund the flight. He's still in Naimey.

Well, we have a new understanding of Satellite providers. Hehe. I send him a readnotify because those have been historically more accurate than what I have gotten with WHOIS. Anyway, here are the results:

@Thud419 - Actually you are partly right. What we trace in emails is the Ip assigned by the ISP. So it is the modem's IP address. If it is his satellite, highly unlikely, then that would explain why he has the same IP. If not then he is sitting in the same cafe. Now a cafe's IP can also change, very few ISP's assign static IPs anymore.

It looks like jojo has beat me to the punch anyways, good job mate.
