I'll be staying in a hotel in France for a while. The hotel has wireless internet access and I'll be using my laptop to bank online and pay bills etc.

Is there any chance the hotel's system adminstrator would be able to get my log-in information? I have a firewall of course but it all goes through the hotel's router which I do not control.

Would it be useful to use anonymous surfing programs (Anonymizer or Steganos) to bank online or that is no good?

Input appreciated.

I suppose your bank provides a secure connection (https://) so any data will be encrypted. Unless your laptop is spyware-infested I don't see any risk. I'll further assume that most clients will trust said hotel with their credit cards so if I was a crook I'd simply work with that and spare me the hassle of hacking. Laughing

btw: anonymous surfing programs would IMO not affect the security level within the wireless network because any input will be channeled through it before you reach any anonymizing server. Wink

like Don said, as long as ypur puter is clean from keyloggers, etc., and as long as you only use https connections, then no problem. Be sure to check that the login page is https as well. Ie: my bank's default login page is NOT https. (which is just careless of them). But, if I change it to https, then I get a secure login page.

Also be very sure you are actually logged into the hotel wireless and not a cloned fake. This is becoming common to clone high profile wireless access points thanks to M$ ability to find any port it can and log in with out telling you what it is doing.

Oh c'mon, it's France...they won't be able to read what he types anyway and if they do they'll a) pretend to not understand and b) be unable to work their way around chase.com. I'd say he's pretty safe. Laughing
