If youre not going to use the phone part of it, just grab a Nokia N800 internet tablet. It's cheaper, it runs an open source linux, has several 3rd party apps, can link to bluetooth phones to use internet (in addition to wifi), two memory card slots for removeable storage, and can do VOIP calls.
Note: I woulda suggested it's predecessor, the Nokia 770, which is even cheaper, but Nokia is no longer offering updates for it and thus there isnt support for current version of flash, which means some sites there are issues, such as youtube. To watch youtube videos (and other vids that use newer version of flash) on a 770, you have to use a 3rd party website to convert the video. I'm still very happy with my 770, though.
Not trying to dog the OP, cause I know some folks will insist on having the iPhone, if for no other reason than the whole "hey, look, I got an iPhone" thing. Just pointing out a better option if you dont care about the phone part of an iPhone.

@Stepan, there are people who would hack a fence post if they thought they could get it to do something other than what it was designed to do, especially if it mean disabling something the manufacturer put in place to block such usage.
In other words, it's the challenge. At least for the ones who figured it out. The rest are just script kiddies.
