Hello, I am a lurker of a few months and I really enjoy reading this forum! Thanks for some great entertainment!! I haven't gotten up the nerve to start baiting yet, but I would like to. I was wondering if any of you have come across this kind of email. I get these emails almost daily and I can't figure out what the point is. It almost sounds like a nonsense romance novel. Here is the one I received today:

The IP address is from Amsterdam. I'm just curious what the point of the email is. There is a picture attached that is an ad for viagra and a discount pharmacy. If the point is to sell pharmaceuticals, why do you think there is always this weird text attached? I'm just curious and wonder if these type of emails can possibly be used for baiting. Is the point to make me so curious that I write back to ask WTF?
Thank you for any insight you can give me! Please don't flame me - I'm a sensitive soul who thinks you people are really cool! |

A method to evade spam filters. The message appears innocent so people get scammed.
EDIT: Someone else put it better than me: Spam that is also Scam.
The viagra explains it as the filters would normally filter that out. |

It probably has an image somewhere trying to sell you Cialis and Viagra.
That lot of text is used to bypass spam filters.
Its effectively, junk mail.
Cheers and Welcome to the Eater. |

Thank you both so much for your quick response! That didn't occur to me. You are right - there is an ad for viagra attached to it. Sorry for the dumb question. |

It's all good. I only learnt about it 2 weeks ago. I've even received some where the spammers forget to link to or mention the cheap drugs/software etc and so it's just a bunch of goobledegook.
Ask away! |

^^ Thank you for such a warm welcome!
Since you don't mind the questions, I have another.
My house was burglarized back in October and my laptop computer was stolen as were all of my electronics. The computer had all of my personal info such as my tax info, etc. It seems like since that happened I have been inundated with 419 scam emails. Do you think this is just a coincidence or am I to think that my personal info is out there somewhere easily accessible to scam artists? Of course I took all of the precautions that I could such as change my bank account number, passwords, put fraud alerts on my credit, etc. Somehow I think there is a connection but it could just be my over active imagination! What do you think? |

Probably just a coincidence I think. A good reminder for all laptop users to have an access password on windows - even if they are the only person to use the computer. My laptop was stolen last year, and there was heaps of personal stuff I'm glad nobody could easily access because I had windows passworded. |

Thanks yrubraj! I did have a password to get into Windows, but I thought it was still possible to hack into it and get that info if you are computer savvy. Hopefully the crooks that stole my computer weren't very computer literate and just wiped it out so they could pawn it.
You are probably right about it being a coincidence about the 419 scam emails. It's probably more likely from registering my email on some site. |

Seems like you've done all you can possibly do. If everything's changed then it should be ok. Most of the 419 emails would not originate within your vicinity and no scammer would be bothered making a long, expensive and arduous trek without knowing it will be extremely profitable (ie you have gold bullion buried under your backyard etc)
If you're worried, get their IP address from the emails (search the forums on how to do this) and do a reverse IP lookup at http://www.dnsstuff.com/ You can get the area from where they are coming from which more often than not is Nigeria or Ghana.
The creepy thing was when I first started baiting, within a week I got my first ever 419 email into my personal email account. Alot of it is conincidence!
Welcome again! Start baiting soon! |

^^ Thanks Lorissa_Andre! You make some great points. Thanks for the link on the reverse IP lookup. That is weird that you got a 419 email in your personal account for the first time once you started baiting!
Thanks everyone for responding! I'm going to bed now - it's 1:00 am here and I have to get up early so I can quit my job tomorrow. I've got a new job starting in 2 weeks but I hate it when I have to give my notice - very nerve wracking!! |
