Anyone ever brewed there own?

I havent a clue how, ive searched google so im going to give it a go.

Interestingly I found a few sites had missing pages - obviously if there legitimate there losing customers a 404 is a sure sign someone isnt 100% risk free lol.

But back to me home brew, what i found is you can buy it for cider, beer, lager, stout, and even stills to make your own gin and vodka and whisky.

Is making whisky aka moonshine lol, well im looking to know if anyone in london has seen these kits for sale in a proper shop, as im reluctant to buy the kit online - i dun wan to get scammed lol.

PS. If its drinkable ill give 10 bottles away of the lager free when its ready, approx 5 weeks time.

a guy I work with has, and he has made some damn good beer. Probably better than most mass-produced swill and even some smaller microbrews. Never heard of a banana hefeweisen until he gave me one at a party last year. He's also made a blueberry hefe, a dark DARK irish stout (yeah, I know stout is dark to begin with), and the last I heard was he was gonna attempt a dunkel.

I've been kicking the idea around for a week or two myself. Once I get my oven fixed, I may give it a shot.

Hey, I'm a homebrewer and have been for about a year. Can't help you with the supplies in London but there are no shortage of helpful websites and forums about. I've kept to the standard brew kits so far but intend to head into the more complex and rewarding grain brewing and kegging when the budget allows. And yes, after a little practice homebrew is definitely better than most of the mass produced swill on offer.

In Southern California there is a micro brewer/restaurant I know of who teaches how to do it and allows you to use their equipment. I know it doesn't help you in London but there may be some places around there that do the same thing.

No, but I've tried other people's home-brew. Some good, some bad and some indifferent.

This brewery has an enviable reputation for their home brew kits. Their overseas contacts are listed here.
And, no I don't work for them.
Edited to add: Google UK search found http://www.art-of-brewing.co.uk and http://www.brewingshop.co.uk They both have a large range of beer kits and accessories listed.

Good Luck and Cheers!

My ex used to brew his own, and bought supplies from a great litle shop in N1. I found their site (link) but it seems the shop closed last year. Sad They are still selling through farmers' markets and online, though.

~it wasn't me,

My paternal grandfather used to home brew. He once brewed Strawberry wine. When he came home from the club one afternoon in his usual state (he was a violent and childish alcoholic) he knocked the barrel over. As he brewed the stuff upstairs it was leaking through the ceiling for hours. After he died we 'inheirited' some bottles of his Barley Beer. As he never bothered to sterilise the bottles or equipment the stuff was poured straight into a drain.

My father was also into home brewing. He started off with larger, which went down rather quickly. He mixed a glass of larger into the dog's supper one night and Mackie snored drunkenly during the night. Then he tried wine, which was so good it was drunk straight from the demi john.

Steer clear of distilling unless you fancy a visit to hospital or from HM customs and excise. I know there is a long tradition of it in many parts of the world but along with rough alcohol goes methanol poisoning. Leave it to the Scots and Moscow garages.

Homebrewed wine and beer can be great. But also dreadful. My parents had friends who would try making wine from anything and knocked up "tea' wine from what was left in the pot. My father said it tasted foul and gave him such a tannin hit he was blind in one eye for a day or two.

p.s. remember- Yeast and humans are the only creatures on the planet that die as a result of their own effluent Shocked

I have and it's fun, it's hard work, and the results are very much worth it.
If your doing it to save money - Don't
By the time you have all the equipment to do a perfect batch every time you could have been under the table at the local many times over.

3 tips

don't use anything to clean the bottles that you paid for - it will taste like shit.
if you did use it, stand the bottles in the sun for a week or so and re rinse. Many times over. hot hot water

Always rinse you're bottles once emptied - saves all that washing again
If your stupid enough to use that baby bottle washing stuff - give up.

Use Dextrose - look it up

Only use half to three quarters of the sugar/dextrose if you want to keep your liver
(it's also better to be still standing after one bottle)

forget the fineings - who cares it tastes the same cloudy or not.

60% of home brewers become alcoholics

trust me I know.
