Years ago, whilst looking for work, I saw several ads looking for "financial representatives" and "payment processors". It looked awfully good at first blush; do the work, keep track of "clients", get the money, don't send a penny until the cheque is fully "cleared" to your bank account. My then-dormant scam antennae twitched, though. It was too easy, so there had to be a catch. I didn't fall for it, and have since learned more than most about mule modalities.
That said, I can really see how this one sucks in people looking for a legit job, esp those that are looking for a second job or a way to work from home. |

Even if I ever was dumb enough to fall for a 419 scam, my lack of funds would always have saved the day eventually |

No, I can't remember a time I have ever fallen for one of these. I have had friends and family that have come close though. Thankfully most of them know nothing of the computer and ask me what I think, because I am in IT. That started me looking around after I received the scam letters and one letter I received this year lead me to 419baiter. Well after that I found this wonderful new hobby. |

I agree, I could never see how anyone could fall for any of those ridiculous emails. Since starting with the love scams I can see it from the victims point of view. |

My catcher account would have you believe I'm the luckiest man alive.
In reality, not a single bit of good fortune, or word of truth has ever passed trough it in over two and a half years. |

Ever been going through your lad-mails and one of them makes you think, just for a microsecond, that this 419-er might be telling the truth? [...] Or izzit just me? |
I almost posted a knee-jerk reaction that it's "just you", but actually I do have one lad (a refugee scammer) who told me a lot of things about himself that I do believe.
I baited him with an unusual strategy. My first reply (as a middle-aged man) was to say "you're a scammer - piss off". My second reply (a few days later) was from the man's teenage daughter who had overheard her dad joking about the incident, felt sorry for the "refugee", and contacted him. A doomed love affair followed, fuelled by her passion and a trust fund that she would soon control, during which he told me various things about life as a refugee in Vienna which I believed at the time and have been able to verify subsequently. For example, I really do believe that he finds it hard to keep warm, so meeting him at 4am at the cold and windy Vienna railway station was particularly cruel. Twice
Back to your question - lads never tell the truth, except incidentally or accidentally. I think my case is exceptional - I had him totally off-topic and his guard was completely down. The only things he lied about to me were details that he was stuck with as a result of his original scam-mail (eg, his false name). He even corrected that by arranging to be re-baptised (in his real name) during our correspondence!
We broke up when I challenged him about trying to scam my dad, but he called me again after the London tube bombings to see if I was OK, which was touching. Of course, by baiting him using a completely different character, I confirmed at an early stage that he really is a complete rogue. |

I can remember first seeing emails and knowing full well they were scams, but I still wondered if there might be some way of getting over on them. I didn't understand the scams well, and thought they were mostly after bank account info. I thought they might transfer some amount of money into an account in an attempt to prove it was a legit transaction, and I thought I might be able to figure out a way to make off with that. Not to get money, but to mess with them. Thankfully, I never tried it, and even more thankfully, I found this place and <strike>learned</strike> am learning tried and true methods to be effective against them.
I've mentioned this before, but a very close friend of my family fell victim to some con men who got to her through her church. They nearly cleaned her out. Since then, I can't muster much sympathy for criminals, particularly those who prey on the weak. |
