Dont know why this has just occurred to me but I sold a car on ebay a couple of months ago and a few days after the sale I got a phone call from someone with a strong african accent asking about it. I told him it had already been sold but he wanted to know how much it had gone for. Didn't tell him of course, that between me and the buyer (and anyone else who looks at the listing)

While I'm not making the assumption that everyone with an african accent is a scammer, is it possible that a scammer could use this info for their own ends? I shouldn't have thought so but you cant be too careful these days

If it was a scam then it probably would have been the overpayment scam. He sends you a cheque for x amount over the asking price to pay his 'shipper' (really his mate or himself) of course the cheque is dud and you are out of pocket and possibly prosecuted for passing fake/nicked cheques.

it could be the person wanted to know what a fair price for an auto was. then they could use that info for their own purposes good or evil
