Ok, on my laptop there is a record facility on the built in camera, I took 46 minutes of video today, the problem is, the file size is 2.75GB.

I didn't think it would be that big a size, because I have a scam video on my computer which is 45 minutes long and is only 28MB, then again, there is a 5 minute Y.M.C.A video and that is 60MB Confused

Anyway, I wanted to upload the video to send to my mum, but because the file size is neary 3GB, it probably wont let me do that to send it, what can I do? Would it be significantly smaller if I put it in a zip file? Any other ideas, why is it that size compared to the other videos on my computer Confused

Forgot to ask, can you buy CD disks that will let you burn a 2.75GB video on to it?

Zipping it probably will not help you. MPEG (that's what I am assuming you have) is already compressed about as far as video can be compressed. Why don't you just burn it to a CD and snail-mail it to her?

Check the properties of the video files you mentioned. I'l think you'll find that the data rates and compression codecs differ.

I'm pretty sure you can downgrade the data rate of the video for your mom so that it's not so huge.

Or, just burn it on a DVD and she'll be able to watch you on her TV.

I have only seen CD's for about 600MB, can you get ones that you can burn 2.75GB to?

@ Bombardier, the maximum file size you can upload on MegaUpload is only 500 MB.

It sounds like you made an mpeg file. What you need to do is look for an mpeg to avi converter. There's some freeware ones on the net if you look for them.

Probably best to burn it to a single layer DVD+R (holds 4 and a bit gigs) so it can be watched on a stand alone DVD player, use +R rather then -R as some players can be funny with these.

Can you change the video resolution with windows movie maker? It doesn't have to be any larger than 3-4 hundred pixels wide does it?

I use Super for video conversion. It converts everything I've ever thrown at it and you can select output quality (and hence file size).

Wayne, it automatically saves webcam video as .mpg, is that the same as mpeg?

All, the other stuff posted above sounds too complicated, like the windows movie maker thing, it's got movie maker on the computer, but I have not used it before and probably never will. What I need is a CD/DVD to burn the video to, but I don't know if they make disks that allow you to burn 2.75GB of video to them, if they do, that would be ideal?

You could burn the file to a DVD-R/DVD+R disc.
You could also use virtualdub to compress the file, pm me if you need any help with the proggie.
mpg/mpeg... jpg/jpeg... htm/html... could it really be the same?

^^^^^ Yes, I could burn to a DVD, but I don't know if a DVD will take a video file of that size?

I didn't realise mpg/mpeg were the same sort of files, knew htm/html were, don't have any experience of videos though, hence me not knowing.

As mentioned earlier, a DVD disc takes up 4.7Gb on a single sided disc (Quick trip to PC World is called for)
I've had a quick look at some of my old stuff done on Pinnacle Studio.
13Gb of raw file gets squidged down to 4.1Gb when it goes onto the DVD itself.

So yes, provided your PC has a DVD writer/re-writer then you are in business. (Windows Movie Maker, I think, can also do this for you)

A simple way to downsize it would be to load it into Movie Maker and saving it as:
Then you can choose a variety of formats that will make it smaller, for example save as "xxx.mpg" for "e-mail" or "512k"
You'll see the space required for each selection once on that window.

If you have Nero and a DVD burner (the new PC should have both), then you can burn the file to a DVD. Because it's over 2gig though, you'll have to make a UDF disc, not ISO as the file limit for ISO discs is 2gig. If your mother had a DVD player, then odds are it'll play just fine if she puts the disc in there. I've done it that way a few times as my TV card captures in MPEG format. If she doesn't have a DVD player, then converting it to an AVI or even RM file is your only option.

(edit) Some DVD drives don't like them though and may jump or give glitches when you try to watch them. My mother in law has 2 DVD players at home, and one works fine with them while the other doesn't want to know. As for buying blank DVDs try somewhere like svp.co.uk as it's much cheaper than going to a shop. Anything up to half the price you'll pay in your local PC shop.

I don't know how different the UK is than here in the USA, but I get my blank dvds for pennies. Walmart and even the grocery store has them.

Are you looking to have her view the movie on her tv (set top dvd) or on her pc? If it's her pc, make sure she also has a dvd drive and don't burn it too fast (try 2x speed). If you burn it too fast than the burner is rated, it may 'choke' on it.
