Hi all,
I am having bit of a panic attack. Someone suggested I post my car for sale in the myspace classified section. I put it in there with a brief description and my telephone number (my myspace profile is set to private thankfully). Well I was under the impression my telephone number was unlisted. I found out otherwise when I received some responses. I checked my telephone number online and it actuallly lists my freaking address!! I got 2 responses within the day, both from people with no friends listed. One dude had a picture, age location, and asked questions I thought one should ask when wanting to buy a car. So I sent him a picture of the car from my regular e-mail address. The other guy seemed more questionable. I gave him details on the car and a link I made to a picture, but no email. However my phone number was in the original classified ad. The more questionable person of course without further questioning offered to send a money order. I started freaking out when he didn't even ask details on the body damage I mentioned. I didn't give any personal info other than my number and my email to the one person. However, I fear they can get my address from the number by searching online. I don't know how these scams usually work. Can they use id theft with my home address, my first name, and my email? I am not going to send any more info and have already deleted the number and email from my ad. However, I am super paranoid and could really use some advice. Does this sound more like a money scam or could some crazy lunatic actually use that small amount of info to do bad things with my name? Thank you in advance for any help!

Don't worry about the ID theft. Just change the ad if possible to remove your address, and screen your callers appropriately.

Thank you for your quick response. Do you think I should change my personal email address to something else, or do you think they will leave it alone?

You'll get plenty of lads sending you scams over the next few days. My suggestion is to get a free Yahoo or Gmail account that you use for internet stuff. They have built in spam filters, and if the spam gets to bad, simply kill the account and get a new one. Wink

They'd probably send a (dodgy) cheque for more than you asked for then ask you to send the difference by we5tern un1on when it clears. The cheque would pass first inspections and the money would be put into your account. You would send the money thinking everything was cool only for your bank to take back the money once they realise the cheque is fake. It happens often.
