I love some of the British definitions for crimes.

Affray - displaying behavior where a third party of reasonable firmness would be afraid for his/her personal safety.

Why don't they just call it: Being a twat.

Usual rules should apply here. If it's locked down, Stay Out. If not, you're welcome to use the service.

I have set up a number of hotspots in Hotels and private homes. The hotels are all open networks. No one has ever requested that I set up encryption for guest services.

For private homes I give the homeowner the option of, Encryption, MAC address filtering, Disable SSID or any combination thereof. I've only had a couple requests for a locked down wireless configuration.

As long as people are maintaining firewalls, disk shares, AV, Spyware and the rest of the necessary windows paraphernalia they should be safe from
nuisance hacking. For the case where a hitchhiker downloaded MP3's or porn the ISP logs should show a different MAC address.

However this mentality is contingent on the fact that this is a rural area with a low crime rate. Most people around here still leave their doors unlocked.

PS I actually named one of my Wireless nodes outside a restaurant "freeloader" Smile

I think theres more to that story than meets the eye, and being a twat suits this individual whoever he is.

I work in Worcester and can guarentee you that my office had the worst security i've ever seen. Unsecured wifi, bluetooth left on and discoverable. Firewalls left off, etc. It's cause we use Macs and no one there has a clue how to set them up. I had to spend hours making sure the connection was secured and that the firewalls were running (and I don't even work in the tech dept)
