Bit of a change from the animal threads, I believe that quite a few people here are guitarists so the big question, who d'you reckon is better, Stevie Ray Vaughn or Ry Cooder? I'm going with Ry but as so many people have never heard of him i'm guessing most people would say Stevie.

It's a little difficult to compare those two in any objective way. Very different styles. I guess my personal preference would be for SRV. Saw him play once and thought he was sensational, but I'm not particularly turned on by any RC recordings I've heard.

Keith Richards is the best. Obviously.

^^^agreed, SRV. I also saw him in concert, years ago in a place in Houston called Fitzgerald's - nice smallish club, and just an awesome show. Oddly enough, at the SRV show my date and I - this is a true story - ran into the guy who had thrown up on her shoes at a Who concert in the Astrodome a year previously. She recognized him immediately (wouldn't you?). Small world, huh? She kept her feet away from him at the SRV show.

I'd go with SRV, but only in his specific genera of music.

And as a bonus I will also throw out Neil Peart as the best rock drummer.

But I am a freak, I'd probably toss in Freddie Mercury for best vocals. Or at least worst teeth.

I'd probably second that. Couldn't really stand his band or their music but there's no doubt when he was at the top of his game there was no one better. But he doesn't even come close to having the worst teeth; anyone remember John Lydon in his Sex Pistols days?

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits is another guitar great, but I fell asleep at one of their gigs. 'Nuff said! Twisted Evil

I think a more ridiculous top 100 would be hard to imagine, Kurt Cobain above Brian May? Cobain should only ever figure in the top 100 Worst guitarists. Good to see Ali Farka Toure in there as he's fantastic and I had the privilege of jamming with him a few years back, incredible guitarist.

Hendrix at 1 is an obvious one but the rest? Cobain, George Harrison and the Edge, these are guys who are alomost universally renowned for being crap. Where are Stevie Salas and Steve Lukather. Maybe it's a horrible joke.

It's more likely just the case that people of different ages choose the guy who was their fave axeman. Hence my preferring Ritchie Blackmore. I couldn't name anyone from any current bands, so I wouldn't vote for them.

I heard him live in concert in 1975. I'll never forget it.

Hendrix was an amazingly inventive and revolutionary guitarist, but wasn't actually that good compared to a lot of guitarists.

SRV for his passion and fire. Ry for his uniqueness and versatility.
I saw Al DiMeola with Manuel Barrueco last year. Al is a jaw dropping, amazing player. I was in awe.

Di Meloa is certainly very versatile, @pantsface, good list except Steve Vai, playing 10 million notes a second with absolutely no feel does not make a good guitarist.
