Good day to everyone. I'm brand new to the idea of scambaiting and stumbled on the site while searching for someplace to report my latest received hoax to. Following your leads, I've decided to hit back. I've created a new website (Http://www.geocities.com/r.dodger) which is bare bones at the moment but I look to improve it as we go. A new email identity ([email protected]), and I'm even wearing a false mustache right now.

I feel so EVIL.

However, I'm running into a problem so far. Following the advice on the tips page, I've been trying to post to Mugu guestbooks. About eight of ten have kicked back with 403 or 404 errors for some reason.

I am using Firefox on a Macintosh computer, but I'd be stunned if that were the issue.

Has anyone else run into this problem? What other recommended methods are there for getting my email address into the hands of a spammer. My walls are bare and I want some new artwork. (I'm going to have some fun with this. In another life, I sometimes paint Dungeons and Dragons miniatures. I wonder if I can get some of my better painted ones carved in ten inches of ironwood?)

Thanks for everything you folks do, and thanks for any advice, tips or encouragement.

Very Respectfully;

Rodger Dodger

Hey Roger,

WELOME!!Soooo pleased you wanna play!beers!

Ok...a bit of advice...

Don't use yahoo, it leaves your IP address, use gmail, hushmail etc.
Go to the 'surplus letters' page and choose your scam. Reply with 'I' interested, tell me more' and you'll be up to your knees with scum in no time!
Sign up for a mentor, they really do help with every question you can ask, even the silly ones...(thanx JH..)

Remember the number one rule around here...

BAIT SAFE!

Mod Edit: Welcome. We don't encourage full requotes of the previous post because it can be seen just above yours. Very Happy

Thanks. Wow. I was completely unaware that Yahoo logged IP addresses. You'd think I'd get a few less adverts for viagra from Yahoo accounts.

I'll check out Hushmail and the surplus letters. Thanks for the speedy response. (And now if I could only figure out why my damn Avatar won't load here...

Thanks.

@Rodger:

Welcome aboard. I'm of absolutely no help whatsoever in the 404 error mystery - I'd just say, do more of them. Don't be afraid to ask for help. And never click the 'quote' button. More people get spanked for that...

@Raymond:

At the risk of being accused of hijacking the thread, allow me to thank you for introducing your character to the baiting world. Never forget to tell them how it's pronounced!

Be polite when you seed guestbooks. If you are really bored you can go to www.tempemail.com and type in frank_n_cents. That will get you plenty

Following your advice, I did so. If you're wrong and my heart gets broken it'll be your fault and the screaming legions of hell will capture you and force you to watch the slides of their holiday in South France.

Or something. I mean, this persona's not really adept at curses.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Jen Derbender.

At the risk of sounding confrontational, I am amused at the hostility towards quoting. In another galaxy, in another life I'm a forum operator myself in an athletic coaching forum on another provider. Our forum provider doesn't HAVE quoting and it's one of the things people hate the most about it. (However it does allow us to keep almost eight years of posts going back to the very first day, which means there's a massive amount of legacy information there.)

I'm sure there's a good reason for it, but I still think it's funny.

Rodger Dodger
(The Artful)

At the risk of amusing you further, I have merged your posts, which were a few minutes apart without a reply. We also have an edit button Wink TS

I think the key words were "FULL requotes." Selected quotes to clarify a post are fine.

The official guidline's guideline on quoting:

Quote:
Please do not abuse the 'quote' function when replying to posts unless it is necessary to clarify the point being made. When answering a post that is directly above your post, there is generally no reason to quote the previous post unless it is to include a specific clip. Where a 'quote' is required to accentuate or clarify something regarding your response, please edit out all that is not required. This will keep the thread clean to read and save on disk space.

It's not really hostility, but a sanity saving measure. One forum comes to mind where they quote every frigging thing the poster above them said before making their own post, which makes it damn near impossible to actually read a thread.

They also don't have guidelines about signatures.

This is probably why they are all trolls.

RD. Try typing "Guyman Guestbook 2007" into Google. I opened a new account the other day and hit loads of guestbooks that way.
I wouldn't recommend signing more than 5 or 6 though, unless you don't mind a tidal wave of shite hitting your inbox. Wait 24 hours and you'll be inundated with juicy scamming lads before you know it.

@ Rodger, as an experienced forum user, you will be aware that every forum has its own culture. What is considered brilliant on one forum will be frowned upon on another forum. After spending some time here, you will see that we are a friendly, inclusive bunch, and yes, we do have a sense of humor (not me, but lots of other people here do). It is a big hectic forum, so rules are needed to keep the overview. When breaking the rules, you will see that members and moderators will steer you in the right direction with a friendly nudge. Maybe the culture of this board is not for everybody (but then again: which board is?), and people who do not like it are free to come or go.

While you are deciding, let me take the time for a hearty 'welcome to eater'. While waiting for your new business partners, read as much as you can. All you read will help you later on in your baiting.

Very true, Perse. You are well known for your lack of humor and utmost seriousness. TS

Of course, folks. I understand the reasoning behind it. (And privately, one of my many, MANY personalities agrees with you. Although the rest of us DO think he's an asshole.)

Persephone: The only reason I find it humorous at all is because it's so vastly different from the culture in my other forum where we'd gladly run a lad backwards through a wood chipper for the ability to quote. (In fact, one of the reasons I went to Firefox as a browser is that a lovely lady sat down and wrote a plugin for it that would allow quoting on that message board provider.) It's not meant to be a condemnation of this place or how it's run. I'm new, and by definition wrong. This is YOUR place and I'm a guest here until I prove myself with either scintillating conversation or the scalps of a few dozen scammers.

TSNerd: This is one of the few places where you'll see me blend my messages to multiple recipients. Since this is a linear message system that doesn't allow threaded viewing it's harder to organize, but it also doesn't fit the way I think, and most of the time I'll reply to a specific person, move to the next message, reply to that, and so forth.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and examples. Eventually I'll be more of a pain in the ass to the lads than to you!

I'm starting to get concerned. No replies yet to my baits. The starving orphans are still starving and the government is still closing in on the heir's fortune and these wundershmucks haven't bothered to read my damn emails? Rover:

Actually, that wasn't meant to be insulting, it was meant to be funny (although not very, I'll admit). My apologies to Persephone (seriously) if it was taken any other way. I also just PM'd Persephone to make that clear as well, in response to her kind and respectful PM to me. I will edit that message to make that clearer when I am done here.

As for Don. <Deleted because it's not worth any more of my time.>

Two points of contact is not "several times." Editing a message is not how to speak to a user. Send him a PM or reply. Hell, I don't even know who Don is, there was no signature on the edit. How could I ask a further question or respectfully interact with someone if they post WITHIN my post?

And by the way, the "quote" button is also the default reply button, which means that when I reply to a message, the first thing in my text editing window is the previous message in its entirety. I happen to be reasonably familiar with this software, and that IS customizable, so draw your own conclusions from that. (My conclusion is that if it were THAT much of a problem, the owner would have changed the presentation to eliminate or reduce quoting, or even given us another default "reply" button.)

Now, my opinion is completely irrelevant to the way this board operates. Moderators can kick me out of here if they don't like my haircut. However, as a rule, I don't talk to people that don't introduce themselves. You'll note that this thread started with a brief introduction from me, and I almost always end my posts with a sincere "very respectfully," especially when I am in a position as a learner asking someone to take their time to teach me something.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the same sort of courtesy from someone that's going sneak into my messages and alter their content. I DO, in fact, think it was rude, VERY rude, to alter my message with a line accusing me of being either argumentative or obtuse. I am neither, and I was under the impression that we were all on the same side here. Since I have read and responded to six PMs in the last couple of days here, I'm well aware that the PM software is working fine and is available for discussions if I'm somehow offending anyone.

So, I'm sorry if I torqued anyone's nipple nuts. I'm VERY sorry if my post to Persephone was taken the wrong way. However HER lack of a sense of humor has nothing to do with my OWN sense of humor, which WILL be displayed. If I want to be serious I'll go to work.

I'm not here to "piss anyone off." However I have two personas in use here right now. One is me, initials DW. Sitting in a bathroom in a small town in America and typing on a laptop. The other is Rodger, who sits in an office in Seattle and prepares arts endowments. Part of the "Rodger" character is a seeming condescension. (Plus, if there's anyone that can look at this message board and not see the hilarity in what's going on, they are a stronger man than me.)

One thing that will remain across EACH personality and character I adopt is a strong core of "tough but fair." In keeping with the Piers Anthony theme (the answer to the trivia question in my post to Persephone) tough but fair means that I will always respond in kind. If someone is respectful and joking to me, I will be the same to them. If someone is surly or argumentative, they'll get that in spades.

It should be noted that honesty and respect is always what starts the conversation. How it proceeds from there is up to the person I'm interacting with.

Thanks for the post, Rover. I'm off to edit that message to Persephone, and I appreciate you bringing its potential for misunderstanding to the forefront. Thank you.

Very respectfully

The default reply button is not the "quote", it's the "post reply" at the bottom of the thread.

When mods edit out requotes or fix extra long links, remove oversize photos etc, they do so in the post and sign it so that the user knows which mod has edited it. That is how it's done on this board, so you're not being singled out for any different treatment. Since nobody but a mod/admin or the original poster can edit a post, you can safely assume that the editor is a mod or your alternate personality. How you treat your alter ego is a matter for you, but I advise you not to piss about with the mods your first day here. Especially not Don. Laughing

If your alter ego persists in the brusque arrogance, he can expect a rough ride. It would be nice to see a more friendly version come to the keyboard. That version of you would get more welcomes that he would know what to do with and might find this a fun place to be. Smile

It's always fun to watch the mods break a new colt. Especially when three or four gather 'round the pen. Laughing

Roger -- welcome. The first bit of advice given is to read, read and read some more. The more you read, the more you learn - not just about baiting, but about how we like communicate on the forum. Some forums encourage crazy wingnut commentary on every little thing that squeaks into their members' minds. Here -- not so much.

While we all look forward to getting to know new people, you'll find a nice short "hello, looking forward to helping out" type of intro gets you much further than a 6-paragraph explanation of your personalities, astrological sign, and favorite color.

Anyway, just some friendly advice. Welcome to Eater.

Don:

You right bastard. I was all in the middle of another post explaining my side of view and growing exasperation and then you post your snarky comment and I laughed so hard I snorted on myself.

I'm sending you my dry cleaning bill.

Okay, we've met. Sorry about the quoting and I'll try to do better in the future. I'm Rodger. It's not my real name, but it's easier to spell. (Don't leave out the "d" in the middle. That's what the CIA does.)

Good to meet you. (Cyberhandshake).

Razor:

I'm not a colt to be broken. I'm a human being, and my first message to this place (at the top of this thread) WAS just the message you describe. However some individuals seemed to take a few of my posts the wrong way and I felt it necessary to explain my seeming "arrogance" and "condescension." I'm actually quite nice and EXTREMELY good looking. (Think "David Hasselhoff during the Knight Rider years" good looking.)

I'm also a Taurces. It's a fishlike bull, because I was born under the Small Boring Group of Stars Next to the Big Dipper. This means that I'm supposed to grow up to be a llama, but I think the palm reader was lying to me. (For one thing, she looked at my feet.)

I'm going to stop now before I get into stride on being weird. I can go on for DAYS like this.
