The over-whelming consensus on this board is that closing lad accounts is not helpful in the fight against 419 crime (CLICKY). This is not because "it spoils our fun" - if it was a case of spoiling some baits to save naive scam victims then I would want to close them as well. Rather, it is the considered judgement of dozens of experienced scam-fighters who are dedicated to hurting scammers' operations (closing their websites, getting them arrested, warning off their victims, etc).

Everyone is free to continue responding to 419 in whatever way s/he chooses. However, we ask that no one should use the Surplus Letters forum on our board as a source of lad accounts for closure. The Surplus Letters forum is a resource set up for people to fight 419 in the ways that board members agree with - please do not abuse it by using in ways that we do not approve of.

If you want to close accounts, please find another board or join the Phone Lads forum here. Closing Phone Lad accounts is definitely the right thing to do. The only other exception that we make are "vanity accounts" such as manager@verybigbank.com - these cost the scammer ~$45 to set up, so closing them is also encouraged.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I take it that we should not use lad accounts to seek revenge on anyone, which sounds absolutely right and ethical.

That leaves me a bit puzzled, because that other paragraphs sound as though we shouldn't be getting the lads email addresses banned. Confused

Sorry! Perhaps I'm not at my brightest at this time of night but I seem to have missed something somewhere. Sorry again! Confused

Since you posted in this thread, are you referring to the Zen's post?

What his post means is that we don't want people taking the lad's email addresses out of Surplus Letters and getting the accounts closed down. There are many reasons for this which Zen covered in his post.

This has nothing to do with using the lads to get revenge on someone. The letters are in Surplus for baiting purposes, but getting a lad's email account closed can cost a baiter the bait.

Does this help? Very Happy

Yes, I see. Thanks a lot! Smile

I was mystified when Zen referred to closure. It's an American expression which I understand to mean the sense of release when you finally resolve a bad experience and can let go of the thoughts, hence my thoughts about revenge being unethical. Being English, I was unaware of other meanings.

Now I'm off to learn more about phone lads. Hope I don't end up asking dumb question in that forum, but I am still new to scambaiting because I have so little time to try it.

I'm glad that I cleared that up for you. Very Happy

Don't be afraid to ask questions - that is how you learn.

Definately the best weapon is to just keep scammers busy . Also scam databases keep records of scammer emails and details . Having their account closed simply causes them to make a new unlisted email . It actually helps them more than hinders them .

Also update databases often , such as stop scammers dot com
