Apple Mac query - video conversions

I use Xilisoft Video converter for converting various video formats on the PC. I will soon by moving over to the Apple Mac, and though I've found most of the Mac equivalents of the PC programs I use, I'm not sure which Mac video converter proggy to is best. Some Mac advice please?

Quicktime Pro lets you "save as"

this fella is standard for still pictures btw: GraphicConverter

Will it let me set custom parameters such as video/audio bit rate, image size, frame rate, file type (mpeg, avi, xvid,wmv) etc?

What you need is TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress

Purchasing the full version will save you time and money. This program is worth it. I use it every day. You can convert most any files into anything else. I have template pre-sets for file conversion. (Have to wait until Monday for that shiver)

I also use After Effects. Once you import and create your job file you can save our your PC files as quicktime movies with correct aspect ratio and frames form editing.

Also Cleaner 5 - Great for all those things the other 2 programs don't do. (which isnt much) - This can make your qtimes for editing.

All these programs will do exactly what you want.

I've been using a Avid on Mac for 13 years and love it. Just bought another Avid Adrenaline, which runs on XP. Not as stable.

If you have a copy of Premier. Open a window and throw it out.

If you don't mind using the command line, mplayer comes with mencoder, which does just about everything, and it's open-source.

Im with NN here...but I use mostly Cleaner 6. I have a copy of it that I can send you Shiver if you want...just dont register it (already registered under my company)

Cleaner does it all...I do quite a bit of conversion work in my job.

VLC and Mencoder (which now has a GUI), both free and both excellent. Quicktime PRO isn't really worth the money as it still has problems with .avi files done with obscure codecs. VLC plays anything. For DVD ripping, MacTheRipper is also pretty good.

Edit: If you absolutely must run a Windoze only prog, get a copy of Parallels

Your still keeping your PC right? Aren't you just using it for file conversation? I don't know if it's not mac compatible. Never tried it. This proggie is also brilliant for re-encoding your videos for web.

Although BW has a copy of Cleaner 6 - for free - grab it!

I apologise to all those programmers out there, but your products are just far too expensive for the home punters. (don't hijack this thread) Very Happy

Use VLC. It's fast, it can export anything to anything (really... I have yet to find a mainstream format it can't do), and it's free.

Failing that, use VisualHub (not free, not as nice.)
