Personally, I find the word in the subject heading offensive. It seems to be a common adjective used by our colonial cousins over the pond in a lot of posts on this forum.

I am not going to apologise, but quite frankly I find such useage objectionable and my thoughts on the matter have been pushed in the Mod direction.

A question...Who is a retard? Albert Einstein or Forrest Gump? <rhetorical question>

I also hate the use of the word 'kinda'. OK? Laughing

I personally know several extremely worthwhile individuals, who contribute a great deal to our local wellbeing here in California, who would probably qualify for the term in the title of this thread. Believe me, my brothers and sisters, the R-word is just as offensive to them as the N-word is to our brothers and sisters in Africa. There's no need to be excessively politically correct on the Eater, but the R-word qualifies for exclusion, in my book. There are plenty of other very satisfying ways to insult people without using that word.

Somewhat related: "midget" is horrible, but dwarf is clinically correct and acceptable, at least where I live, according to the people themselves.

However, I really am kinda happy this subject came up.

I just find the word objectionable, and sadly it is used on this forum as a derogatory term by people who, in my opinion, should know better.

The post title was meant to make people take notice and comment.

Plus it keeps my flagging post count up responding to the flack and keeps the Mod lounge on its toes. Laughing

I for one am fed up with political correctness. It's a fine line and varies according to individual standards. The word 'retard' is objectionable to me, but so are some sexist remarks that crop up occasionally. But 'free speech' and 'live and let live' etc.
I don't think you can just blame the 'septic tanks' though.
It should be down to common sense and respect for others but unfortunately not everyone has the same standards. By the same token, I don't mind being called white trash, or blond (which I am). For the most part, people are too defensive. but for the word in question, it's unlikely that they can defend themselves. Personally, I would use brain-dead frontal-lobotomised numpty as a substitute. I think I'll have another glass of wine, and IBTL

How do you know whether or not the person could know better, though? You usually can't tell if someone honestly has a neurological disability or if they're just not all that bright just from what they say over the internet.

That said, I'm not offended by the word, even though I do fit into the category of people it commonly refers to in the non-medical sense (fairly bad autism, was in a Special Ed class for one particular subject in highschool). I try to refrain from using it around people who might think otherwise though.
