How far has 'Vladuz' hacked into eBay?Posted: Friday, March 2 at 04:00 am CT by Bob Sullivan
There is no disputing that a hacker who goes by the name Vladuz has at the very least become a public nuisance to eBay. But some observers think the hacks Vladuz has pulled off reveal a much deeper problem at the auction giant.

Vladuz claims to have broken into eBays computers, imperiling the integrity of auction sites entire system of buying and selling. And the hacker has provided some evidence, last week posting messages to eBay's Web site while posing as employees of the site.

Vladuz demonstrated the hack by posting notes on the customer service bulletin board using the same bold pink background used by actual eBay employees.

Thanks for posting this. Reading it reminded me to finally cancel my ebay & paypal accounts. I hadn't been using them anymore for the last two years or so & they were just sitting around, so this way at least I don't need to worry about ebay being undermined by hackers and scammers.

Yikes! I have two items ending today that I need to go look at. I've never had any real problems with ebay, but they seem very slow to shut down scam accounts that get reported.

Crap!!! I had a buyer bidding like crazy and two hours before it ends I get this from him:

Quote:
I regret to tell you that this has been a huge mistake on bidding. My son got on to my ebay account and raised the bid up because he didn't know any better. If the auction wins in my favor I apologize a million times because i won't be able to pay for it. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Now I have two choices. Cancel his bid, and look like a shill, or let him win and report him as a non-payer to get my fees recovered. He's still the high bidder, and it's doubtful anyone will top him.

Any quick suggestions?

I'd report him as a non-payer - of course you'll get negative feedback, but you may be able to get that cancelled.

Having said that, I had an item for sale which was 'bought' by someone in Korea. Apart from one email from him apologising for the delay in paying, I never heard from him again, but the listing fees weren't that much so I just let it go.

Now I've read your post properly Embarassed I would cancel the bid

Edit: You could always withdraw the item and relist it, but then of course you're up for listing fees

Cancel the bid, I believe that ebay asks for reason for cancelling, just paste that email in and that should be enough for them I would think

If I cancel, I pay fees on a $700 item. If I let him win, I can recover the fees. But I'm afraid he will cancel his bids at the last minute, and that will be even worse.

I don't have much luck reasoning with ebay, all I ever get is auto responses from them, so trying to recover the fees any other way may be useless.

Edit: I found out I can't cancel with less than 12 hours left. I posted his letter and my nice response in the listing so no one else will bid and leave him the winner. This guy is responsible for his ebay account, so I'll report him as a non payer. Thanks!

Hi Shadow - you could let him win - then offer a 'second' chance to the next highest bidder.
If you report him as a non-payer they will refund your fees.
I sell a lot of mobile phones and it's a nightmare with loonies and nutters.
Don't get me started on some of the muppetry that uses evilbay.......

Let us know how you get on.

are you selling something that a lot of other people are also offering? "my kid kept bidding up" sounds a little fishy and more like someone who is trying to get in on a lower auction elsewhere. I mean how many people tell their children what their passwords are.

Thinking about it, I once had a Greek winner who then said he wanted to pay in monthly instalments starting in a couple of months time, so I sold that item to the next highest bidder with no problems.
