Galway Civic Trust nearly took the bait to become the latest victim of an online phishing scam after it received news that it was in line to get nearly €1 million from the estate of the late British prime minister Sir Edward Heath.
On Thursday the heritage organisation was shocked to receive an email informing it that it was to get £750,000 stg from the estate of the late Tory leader.
Delighted at the news, the Trust issued a statement about the fake funding boost. The statement even included the line, “It is fitting that Galway Civic Trust should receive this money.”
But Trust employees soon realised they had nearly fallen victim to a sophisticated phishing scam where conmen use the net to extract money from their victims.
Galway Civic Trust chairperson Dello Collier said, “We didn’t have any doubts about it [at first] because it is appropriate because Sir Edward Heath was a great yachtsman and a sailor and perhaps one of his friends knew about our work on the restoration of the lighthouse on Mutton Island so it didn’t ring any bells.
“But it was only really later that it dawned on us that it was a phishing email and we were invited in the email to click on a particular number and give our bank details.”
Normally online scams involve emails telling people that they have won the Nigerian lottery even though they have never entered it, but Ms Collier warned people to be very careful of more sophisticated schemes like this.
She added, “Be wary when you receive an email that sounds very tempting and exciting.”
Sir Edward Heath's greatest achievement as British prime minister was to take Britain into the European Community back in 1973 and, even though he died in 2005 his latest achievement was to nearly bankrupt Galway Civic Trust.
