I'm back from nine days in Hong Kong. It was a great trip. I ended up not eating any meals in the North Point area, other than the snacks that we purchased at a nearby supermarket.

Here are some eating highlights from the trip:

Genki Sushi: This is a chain of cheap conveyer belt sushi restaurants. I ate at the one in Wan Chai three times over the course of the trip. It's cheap and a good value.

Nepal: This small restaurant is on Staunton Street in SoHo. We ate here twice, and it was outstanding both times. Items of particular note: the pumpkin soup, the naan with yak cheese, and sikharni for dessert.

Spaghetti House: Another chain. It looks like a cheap pizzeria from the outside, but it's actually kind of upscale once you get inside and look at the decor (and the menu). Pizza wasn't great, but it wasn't awful. Not a good value, though. We ate here because we were starving and it was right in front of us.

Via Quadronno: This is fancy italian restaurant in the IFC building in Central. We had a quick lunch here. The proscuitto and buffalo mozzarella sandwich was delicious, but it was eleven bucks.

city'super: This is a supermarket in IFC. Most of the stuff is overpriced imported stuff for people with deep pockets. If you're an investment banker who really misses his Pop-Tarts�, then go here and pay six dollars for a box. They have a great cheese counter, though. We scored a wheel of real raw milk camembert, which we can't get back home.

Zetland Hall: This is the Masonic Hall, which is on Kennedy Road. It's up the hill from Hong Kong Park and right by the Kennedy Road stop on the Peak Tram. They serve a cheap lunch every weekday, with a curry buffet every Friday. I had four dinners there in conjunction with Masonic meetings, including a nine course Chinese feast, and some haggis as part of a Burns Night. The food here is excellent.

Yung Kee: Go here and order the roast goose. I've never met anyone who didn't think that this place has the best roast goose in the world. It's really good.

Pret a Manger: Bog standard chain deli. We ate at the one in IFC.

The reason for frequenting IFC is that it's right by the ferry piers.

Also, in Macau:

A Lorcha: An amazing and very reasonable Portuguese restaurant.

888 Gourmet Place: This is the buffet restaurant at the Sands Macau, which is the largest casino in the world. There were some really great items on this buffet, including lamb chops, passable sushi, and an amazing selection of good desserts. Sands is building a casino near my house, and I thought I'd check out their operation in Macau. I also won the equivalent of $180 at the roulette wheel. I hit a number on my fourth spin and walked away.

There were a few other places, too. I may remember them once my brain returns to Eastern Standard Time.

Did you try the Jockey club? They do a steak the size of a small continent and pile it up with enough additional meat products to warrant an onsite slaughter house. Great spuds - and I believe they have the best gravy in HK.

We didn't get to the Jockey Club. My girlfriend is from Louisville, Kentucky, so she's a de facto horseracing fan (once a year). We were going to try to get there, but the races didn't align with our itinerary.

I've been to Guangxi province - I went to Beihai.

Was a very interesting/weird place. It looked like they had started a very very large resort project (probably government joint ventured with a private developer).

Anyway the building structure, core walls and basic path layout were all in place, but the glazing, cladding and facilities were not installed by the look of things. There was a srip of this stuff along the coast that went on for a couple of miles; it was huge. From the look of the development, it was initally intended for service apartment, hotel and commercial/recreation facilities.

I guess one of the partners pulled out and then the site was just left sitting there waiting for some wiley investor to come along with more money than sense. There was no machinery in sight and the residents said it had been there for two or three years.

Anyway, might be worth taking an enourmous pile of cash if you're interested in starting a beach resort while you're on holiday.

I did hear a story on the bbc about how cautiously western fast food places entered the hk market, since the city was proud of its food offerings.
the city in guangxi I'm supposed to visit is proud that it has no western fast food places.
not sure this is much to brag about, considering they eat dogs, scorpions, snakes, and one town in the 6o's had a major outbreak of cannibalism.

batt.....i won't be too far from beihal. I did see a resort online in that area that was government connected, very inexpensive.

I checked up on the area. tour guides pretty much said to skip it and head to hainan on the ferry, mostly because the beaches are better.

will be in hk and macao with a former resident. will pass on any good places to eat.

dunno about mcd's in guangxi.
snake mcnuggets? fido mcmuffin? mayor mcbichonfriese? hot cakes and processed political opponent patty?
this will be a bizarre trip for me, one where I enjoy some great food, but overall drop some pounds.

When I was in Guang Xi, among the more exciting things I ate were Sparrows (at least that's what I think they were), Lizards, Scorpions, some type of grasshopper and dog meat.

Oh and it was Chinese new year at the time. I remember because the first phrase I learned was "Xin Nian Hao" and I got rat faced drunk in the sun every day and screamed it at every person I met on the street. The mosquitos finished off every last drop of blood I didn't manage to dry up with the booze and we played games with fireworks on the beach. I got badly burned on my hand when I tried to hold onto the stick of a huge rocket after lighting the fuse.

If you go to Macau, be sure to say hello to the nice Russian dancers in Tryst (The night club in the Wynn casino). Tell them I said hi.

Oh and there's a type of Rice wine in the south made from pig fat. Don't forget to drink that. It's nicer than it sounds.

I knew that I'd been in Hong Kong for too long when a cabbie got completely lost when taking me to Zetland Hall. I ended up having to give him directions.

The only thing I can guess is that he was driving to Kennedy Town instead of Kennedy Road. On my previous three trips from my hotel to Zetland Hall, the fare was about 40HKD. On this trip, it was 58HKD. I told him that I wasn't paying for his mistake, and he eventually agreed to take 40HKD.

I have a friend in HK who travels a lot and enjoys horrifying people in other countries when they ask him what he'd like to eat, to which he replies that, being Chinese, he'll eat anything which has four legs and most things that have none, plus anything with wings.

He means it, too. I've had to give up going out to dinner with him. I mean, grilled bat... Mad

russian dancers? I don't even want to see a bottle of russian dressing while on vacation!!!

I doubt I will be eating too adventurously on this trip!
I will be staying with a local family part of the trip.
if I see one of them walking a dog on a leash, does that mean they're exercising the family pet, or have been shopping?
maybe its a good time to pretend to be a vegetarian??

Too bad you didn't eat in North Point. There are many nice restaurants ! Smile

Having lived in China for nearly four years I can confirm that not all Chinese eat everything with four legs. Some prefer their meat to have had two, six, five or as many as nineteen legs.

The Shanghai speciality, eight legged duck is my favorite.

Sure, I've been there.

Great eating market called... something circus. Perhaps someone can remind me of the name.

The thing I remember was that you order stuff from these numerous tiny stalls by waving your hand vaguely at stuff then go sit down at a table in an area, which must be half a kilometre square. Then, presumably by way of some internal avian navigation device, the people from the stalls all turn up at your table at the same time and quote you a lump sum for the cost of the food. Then when you pay them they stand there and put on a little slap-stick show while they divide up the cash.

I have no idea how they found us.

Edit - Oh and I stayed at the Western stanford, which at the time was the tallest hotel in the world. Good cocktail bar.
