Oops! Scam artists target North Bay Police Service

Nugget Staff
Local News - Thursday, February 01, 2007 Updated @ 2:39:38 PM

Even North Bay Police Service isn't immune from the typical cash-for-nothing scams operating these days.

The service recently received a $4,000 cheque made out to a fictitious person at police headquarters.

The cheque was drawn from a legitimate company in California.

An accompanying instruction sheet advised the receiver to cash it and then send a portion of the money back to the sender.

The city police fraud co-ordinator contacted the California company and advised its banking practices may have been compromised, while the firm confirmed the cheque was fake.

An instruction sheet that came with the cheque was written in broken English and it was obvious it was what is commonly referred to as a "Nigerian scam," police say.

The fake cheque was delivered by a legitimate courier.

I don't think it is kosher to involve the police or other public servants. Bad practice.

^^^
Indeed, it's a waste of their time having to deal with fake cheques from scammers when there's little scope for action to be taken.

It seems in this case it wasn't a waste of time, they acted pro activley and advised the company and stopped a crime being committed. That is their job right? Also it appears that it was reported to the media bringing about awarness and hopefully stopping some poor mug getting ripped off.

Oh and it wasn't me Very Happy
