I love Halloween! It's not about the begging for candy part that's fun. What's fun is:
Eating tons of the candy in between answering the door. . .wait, back up, buying halloween candy and eating it and having to buy more for the trick or treaters. Laughing

Making costumes for my kids.
Dressing up in Costumes!! (I'm a teacher of young children and a mom, I still dress up every year with the kids).
Carving pumpkins

Halloween has gotten too commercial in the US though. There's really no need for much shopping. . . except for candy!

I have no idea how to make my avatar halloweenish though.

I really like the artistry in the 2nd one.

If you could do something similar minus the offensive hanging from the tree, it would be good.

Call me Mr. Insensitve, but I think a dead person hanging from a tree on a Jack O'Lantern for Halloween is perfectly okie-dokie.

I still think it will offend people as it is a man hanging from a tree and really does depict lynching Sad

If the character being hanged was a witch I'd feel differently as that would certainly be more halloweenish. In the USA a witch hanging from a tree is associated with Halloween but a man hanging is associated with lynching.

I suppose it's all a matter of perception. I see that pumpkin as being just a traditional haunted graveyard scene, with ye olde criminal hanging from ye haunted tree, with a spooky owl looking on. Sights like that were quite common here in the UK for centuries (I mean in RL, not just as carvings or pictures), and they certainly weren't lynchings, just executions. Bodies of executed criminals were left hanging all over the place, as a warning to anyone who was minded to emulate them.

And speaking as a witch, I in turn could be offended if it was a witch hanging from the tree. But not to the extent I'd stop someone carving it on a pumpkin. Though witches were generally burned. Except in Scotland, where they were treated to the original form of bungee jumping.

People were hanged well before slavery and will be hanged well after. I live in the south and such a thought never crossed my mind. I thought Lotta was refering to the fact that people might be unconfortable with that because of suicide.

Halloween is about dead things and all that. Some people will be offended by the goblins and such too.

My ex wife was, but would still pick out costumes for her nephew to wear, to "fall festivals" at her church.

There are Pagans who find what Christians have turned Samhain into to be a tad offensive, but again, I wouldn't try to stop kids having fun on the night. Actually, it's probably the one night of the year you can put on your robes and walk along the street, and not get any hassle! Laughing

Samhain is from when the Autumn/Fall solstice fell, and the spirits of the dead were free to roam, the candle in the window showed them where the offerrings were for them, as a Harvest festival, which it became, a hollowed out pumpkin with a light inside grew to be the world view of Hallowen

On All Hallows Night, as it was, farmers bought their stock inside, a cross, similar to St Bridgits, was placed above the byre

Any strange noises, appearances outside the home, in the windows, were regarded as symbols of the spirits at large in the area

Gifts were put at the gate , or the doorstep

from this we have degenerated to gangs of marauding kids, ransacking neighbourhoods in search of sugar fixes
