I'm not sure what the set up here is at present, but, the way things are, wouldn't it be better to put the whole site behind a log in ? - then any bot wouldn't see anything.

The only drawback is that the site won't be publically visible and no new members, but for the time being, it's a matter of remaining in existence.

Just a thought.

@GomerPyle - If I put the site behind a login / password system it will still not stop the bots from chewing up all the available connections. They simply hammer the ip on port 80.

We have been running here for two weeks so far (we are on our proper server at he moment) I do have two live replica's running 24/7 just in case they do find us here. A simple url change and we will be up and running almost instantaneously with no loss of data.

My test server or sacrificial lamb system has been setup to "test the waters" so to speak. I.E as long as the sacrificial lamb is bieng attacked I know it is not safe to point the main url back here. Over the last week the test server has been attacked. Nothing major just some small attacks, but an attack nevertheless. Personally i do not believe the attacks will last much longer

I just thought that the bots wouldn't know who we are without accessing content. So by effectively hiding the content we remain invisible to outsiders.

If they can access content, then they can launch an attack - but I admit that I haven't a clue what I'm talking about Laughing

Think of it like a telephone. You dial the IP address followed by the extension "80", and you get the 419eater office. We've got loads of lines, but if enough people ring up at the same time they can use them all up and anyone else that calls gets an engaged tone.

The bots are making heavy breathing calls. Rover has programmed our exchange so it can detect that and disconnect them, but if enough of them call they can still block all the lines while the exchange is still deciding if they are bogus or not.

We could put in a receptionist who asks for a password before she passes the call on, but that wouldn't help because the bots don't care who they are talking to. They will just breath heavily at the receptionist, and still block the phone line.

Good work. Survive the attack and be stronger after and think of the time and money the enemy has spent on doing it. By the way giving money to this site is part of the fight. But it is money well spent in the fight.
You can pull a lions tail a few times, but be careful if/when it wakes, cos it'll take your head off.

@ jojobean - I'm amazing - a few years back I ran a server off my home pc with sql, PHP and no security Rolling Eyes

with a redirect to give me a fixed addie. It was a toy but I was just impressed I managed to get it all working without realising that it had become owned by the Russians. The word Zapchast still sends shivvers up my spine.

I presumed we had a new ip and addie, but then I'm not poking about and investigating what we're doing.
