Yesterday, not far from where I live, a 11 year old child was shot dead in the street, simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's all over the news here in the UK (see http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-1281007,00.html ). It's a real tragedy.
Moments ago I was just watching a Sky News report about the shooting, and about half way through this very important piece, it broke away to a live news conference featuring that annoying tosser, Tim Henman (A UK Tennis player). Apparently "Tiger Tim" is announcing his retirement and this is so hugely important that we have to break away from REAL news to watch this nob tell us his packing it all in 
Non-news like this, interfering with real major news is really starting to piss me off now. I'm not interested in what excuses Tim is coming up with for retiring. I'm not interested in unimportant over-paid-under-achieving sporting tits. If people want to shed a tear over such an non-entity then for God's sake do it during the sports bulletin. Don't waste valuable real news airtime over crap like this.
I'm not blaming Sky News alone. Most of the UK news broadcasters are covering Tim's imminent departure live. WHO FRIKKIN' CARES?!

Can't blame Tim (usless git) Henman for the news breaking into the report, its just another example of the media dictating to us what we should be watching and what we should be concerned about.
Probably find there some sponsorship deal in there somewhere |

It is all in the numbers. People care way too much about celebrities they never met in their life. Obsession, living their life through others. I usually do not even know who they are talking about. Fact is that people over-value this kind of news (some rich kid going to jail, sportsman retiring, and did Clinton inhale or not?), that the news just follows suit. I am sure they get better ratings.
Ook, I noticed it is real difficult to get news from other parts of the world in the States. Must be because the USA is a huge country, so plenty of national news. When american friends visit me, they are always blown away with the easy access they have to news regarding Israel for instance. |

International News is nonexistent here. Most Americans don't care, is why that is I think. Personally I get a lot of my news from National Public Radio which will broadcast some BBC and Deutchavella radio. I can't stand normal national news, even some local stuff is bad, because it all seems to be celebrity centric. |

That's a true assessment... although I think it got better the last few years (mainly because certain things got worst). Some news channels, being 24 hours news, will have some international news segments. The daily news on the network channels will have very little...however, they are good for local news.
The media will go where the public will take it... people are more interested in a snooty nose heiress going to jail, or a tennis player retiring... so advertisers will pay more for ad during broadcast of such "news"... |

I have a great idea for Big Brother, but don't want to hijack this thread so I will save it until my negotiations with Channel 4 are concluded.
Back on the OP, just been watching BBC breakfast news on the shooting. They were interviewing an anti-gun crime campaigner called Mr Practical Wisdom, the spokesman for the 'Gunz Down' campaign. Also interviewed the distraught parents. They had just bought their boy his senior school uniform ready for starting in September. Sadly, he will never get to wear it.
Mr Henman on the other hand is simply a middle class mummy's boy under-achieving waste of space whose earnings were inversely proportional to his talent to hit a hairy green ball with a piece of titanium, or whatever it is they use these days. I love tennis, nearly as much as I like making love to a beautiful woman. |

I think 3 people of various ages have now been arrested, though 2 are out on bail?
The Henman press conference (from the USA) was arranged to stop all the will he/won't he stuff in the media - I suspect the slots were all bought and paid for before that poor wee boy was murdered, and the Beeb had already coughed up some dosh for the broadcast, so decided to go ahead with it. Personally, I'd have taped it and shown it on delay, but that's someone else's call. Sadly, the Beeb seem to be getting a lot of these calls wrong at the moment. |

Well, so much for banning the legal ownership of handguns, it did'nt work very well did it?.
The Olympic shooting team have to go & practice in France while illegal handguns are on the increase in the UK. If kids could go to proper firing ranges & get it out of their system, it may take the romance out of it & people with illegal guns would somehow feel less special.
I would like to try out some of the guns I see on TV just out of curiosity, but I think that I would soon get bored with it.
