Frikkin' gmail! I accidentally forwarded the wrong (ahem) Barrister reply to my distraught-euro-female-missionary-trapped-in-Africa lad.

Lad is either fearful of the chopping block, or (more likely) is just anxious that another scam might alert me that he's up to no good.

I did that, too, but answered an email with another name (I have more than one victim). Had to explain wbout my "proper" name. Tangled web, indeed...

He may have a trojan virus, he should do a scan or move to a newer box.

I think we've all done this at least once. My method of dealing with it is the same as my method of baiting: Boolsheet through it. I'll say "but this guy contacted me and said he was working with you" and create some paranoia (an easy thing to do - lads are twitchy by nature), or insist that "no no, I'm sure you gave me that exact barrister. I have your e-mail right here" and then fake up (with fake headers) an e-mail instructing me to do it, which also creates paranoia.

If I screw up and the lad calls me on it, I often just use that as an example of how ineffective it is to deal with third parties - especially when confidentiality is so important to the "business" at hand. I then insist on dealing solely with them, and for some reason they always agree, and the bait moves on most of the time.

Either way, who cares? You got your lad off script and caused confusion, so mission accomplished. If your lad twigs, he twigs. Go get another one (they're not expensive) and try not to drink so much when you bait next time.
