My Grandpa (RIP) had some great sayings...
"The only thing you have left on your death bed are memories, so make them good ones"
Also...
"No man ever lay on his death bed saying 'I wish I'd spent another day at the office'"
and...
"A wise man learns by his own mistakes. A very wise man learns by other peoples."
I live by these sayings as often as I can. What sayings have been passed onto you that you love? |

My dad just told me that third one XD (I was talking with him about how I could ask other folks about programming and such)
Hmm, let's see... This is a rather humourous one but still one I live by.
"Wise men wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Wiser men don't urinate on their hands in the first place."

Sounds like a variation of "don't bite off more than you can chew" in any case it's the best variation I've heard yet ^^
Hmm... I'm sure I have more sayings here (not exactly grandpa sayings, since I don't have any grandparents anymore (three were already dead before I was born so I can't say I knew them )) |

A friend's father once said to me: "if you want to have something done, give it to a busy person."
It has turned out to be one of the most intelligent sentences I have ever heard. |

Not one of Grandpa's sayings, but one I heard on a film the other night which I thought was great was...
"Don't become a fingerprint on a window of a skyscraper." |

I've always thought of it more as 'when you have a seemingly insurmountable problem, just start at the beginning and keep going one bit at a time until you are done, along the lines of not being able to 'see the wood for the trees'.
The best piece of maths he ever taught me...
'N over T times 100 equals P' where N = Number, T =Total and P = Percentage. I still say it quietly to myself when I need to work out a percentage. Or...

Grandpa told me to never sign my name to anything I didn't believe, and if I did sign, to sign it big and bodly so every one knew who signed it.
I figure he was talking about signatures like John Hancock, so, when I sign something, I sign it like John did. |

It's to do with Trigonometery, right?
I can sort of see how SPH, CBH and TPB would translate (somehow) to SOH CAH TOA |

I suppose it'd be different words depending on where you're taught. In scotland it's almost always Opposite, Adjacent and Hypotenuse |

OAH in Birmingham too. Surely with BPH you'd have to remember which angle it was and translate if you had a different one?
A friend in East Birmingham was taught "Never Enter Smiths Wood". Good advice even if you ignore the mnemonic.
And dragging the subject back on-topic:
Never argue with a fool; the fool wont learn anything and nobody will be able to tell the difference. |

Before you criticise someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away from them and you have their shoes!
A more serious one now XD
Even a fool may be considered wise if he keeps his mouth shut. |

Actually it was my father who told me the mnemonic. It's still useful.
But back on topic...
To a frightened 4 year old afraid of ghosts in her room...
"Its not the dead that you have to be afraid of, it's the living" |

"I haven't had this much fun since the pigs ate my little brother."
"You will sleep in the bed that you make."
"Tell one lie and you will have to tell ten more to get out of it."
"We should eat before we get hungry, then we will never feel the hunger pain"
"She was nothing to write home about."
-My Paw Paw
BTW, Grandma died at 58 (heart) I was 10, he moved in with us and he lived to be 92. We tried to fix him up with a few and he always said,
"I had the only woman that I ever wanted."
He was tall, handsome and she was beautiful. He never spoke an unkind word to or about anyone. |
