This year has not started off very good.....

BASTROP, La. (AP) - A shootout has left two police officers and a suspect dead in northeast Louisiana.

The violence happened during the afternoon at a hotel on the main square in Bastrop, about 100 miles east of Shreveport.

Officials say two paramedics were also wounded when they arrived at the scene. A spokesman for the state police says 1 of the paramedics is in stable condition and the other was not seriously hurt.

It's unclear just what sparked the shooting. Police searched the hotel and surrounding areas for a woman linked to a stolen car from Texas found at the hotel. The woman also is being investigated in a killing near Houston.

The two Officers were Detectives John Smith and Chuck Wilson. John and I worked closely during my early years in Law enforcement and he will be missed.

My wife was working that day and was the second unit on the scene. She saw Chuck laying on the sidewalk and as she exited her cruiser to go and help Chuck, the gunman started firing in her direction. Her cruiser was shot up but she made it to Chuck and as she attempted to help him, he died in her arms.

There is way more to this madness but I can't release any details yet.

This incident has affected the entire LEO community here and it's going to take a long time to get over it.

Sorry, as always to hear C2B. I lost five friends this way. I�m glad to hear that your wife wasn�t hurt physically. Was she required to take some time off, if you don�t mind me asking? Send her my best and light a candle for me.

So sad chief. My son-in-law is a policeman in Queensland here and recently they had one of their own killed while checking a guy who hadn't reported to the police as he was meant to. Such a sad waste of good people.

Sorry to hear the news C2B. My son had his first interview to be an "Explorer" with the local police department here. I really hope she suffers as much as possible.

This is never good to hear! - Sorry to hear all of this.
A good friend of mine is in "School" to become a deputy with the local police dept.

I wish everyone on the good side well.

Update:

Attended the funeral for Chuck this morning. Over a thousand people attended with approximately 400 Officers on scene representing agencies from all over the South (even one from Massachusetts). The funeral procession was right at 10 miles long.

Johns funeral is this Saturday. This will be the hard one for me.

Chief, thoughts are with you and your wife. Sorry to hear about the loss.
I have worked with many LEAs and know how close the brotherhood is there. Our neighbor is a LEO and a really great person. He was in the local paper due to a call. Reading what they released to the press, it could have turned bad real quickly. Most people have no concept how dangerous protecting and serving really is.

Take time to grieve and remember and be safe!

Chief2B---I never post here but keep up with the news. We are Katrina survivors who returned to a wrecked city. I live across the street from the Esplanade Mall so you know my location.
We returned to a wrecked town with no stores, no hospitals, no doctors, no traffic lights, no nothing that is needed for civilized living.
But we had law enforcement people from almost all over the country. Help poured in from Paramas, New Jersey, NYC Port Authority, the DEA--everywhere.
Result? Although soon over run by strangers coming in to help rebuild, with many of them illegal aliens, we still felt safe. We were safe!! A lot of us learned to appreciate you LEO's much better when we saw what your presence meant.
You guys are heros! The loss of these two show what dangers you face protecting us. I appreciate it.
