About a few hours ago, a friend of mine who is a member of another group of scam baiters received an email. The email comes from Western Union.

Apparently, WU is running a promotion:

I have dreaded many things already about scammers, but I could not have ever imagined this!

The worst part about this is that it is a REAL and ACTUAL promotion! Grrr! Evil or Very Mad

So, are you suggesting that we contact the webmaster for Western Union and tell 'em that someone's compromised their webservers? The original URL is on mailings.westernunion.com but redirects to b1live.com.

As TSnerd said, there is no mention of this "promotion" on Western Union's website. As for the domain, "mailings.westernunion.com" doesn't exist per Netcraft. A google search of "mailings.westernunion.com" pulls up a crapload of spam/ phishing emails, and the instant redirection to a page on b1live.com is VERY suspect.

I smell bullshit.

You can contact them if you want, Alcathiax, but I doubt they can do anything about it.

The best thing to do, just like any other thing like this that goes out on mass mailing, is let your friends know that it isn't true so that they don't propagate it.

Further research: westernunion.com is hosted on a dedicated server at IP 206.201.227.250.
mailings.westernunion.com tracks to 216.73.89.11, Double Click, Inc.
WU's servers are just fine. I think I know how the spammers are doing this, but it's not for public consumption.

The guy in the banner looks cool and has a perfect set of teeth, I think he would nt know about scams.Those dollar bills look real to me too.

Iam an honest man, my father used to say , 'you can't cheat an honest man', but i think he too heard that line from someone else.

Western union does give out dodgy shampoos and colourful bags, i dont know if they ever do cash promotions.

It could be a picture they found from somewhere else and put it there to make it seem more real. Adding people to images like that is photoshop 101.
