I had some problems with registration, and an Admin named Mike almost instantaineously corrected what ever it was. Thank you, Mike.
I have been reading around this site for about a week. I read most if not all of Shivers baits, as well as most of the other contributors he lists. I have to say, there is some amazing stuff here. The innovation and dedication is remarkable.
I have formed some questions maybe some one can answer. I've read a lot of the forum, but, it's impossible to read it all, so, if my questions have already been addressed, I apologize.
How organized do you feel these scammers are? In my reading I noticed many similarities, not only in the original scam letters, but in the emails after you get them off script. I found myself wondering if these were organized gangs of scammers.
I see that when the play is over, many of you tell the scammer that you know he was scamming all along, and threaten to report him to the authorities.
Is it really a good idea to inform them that the baiters are monitoring them so that they are more suspicious next time some body tries to waste their time and money? Or, would it be better to just let them go after doing all you can so that another baiter can take over where you left off?
Do you really report them to the authorities, and, are they actually prosecuting the scammers? Has there been any follow up?
I apologize if I am asking too many questions, but, like I said, I've been reading a lot and these things have been bugging me.
Thanks again, Mike. |

Depends what you mean by "organised". Often a head scammer known as an "Oga" will be effectively paying wages to lads further down the rungs to find email addresses, do the boring initial stages of the transaction and so on, before the Oga comes along to pick up the money. Lads generally see themselves in competition with other lads, which is why dolla chopping (pretending that another lad is going to end up with the money they think they were going to get) is so effective.

This is generally not advised these days (baiting evolves you know!) because it will make lads more aware of baiters, and possibly better at picking out which people are baiters and which people are real victims. Which is the last thing we want.

See above, I think that answers this question.

It's generally very very difficult to achieve an arrest, although is has been done ( look for the sign in some baiters' signatures). The only chance you're ever really going to have getting a scammer arrested is within a country such as the UK or USA. Going after someone in Nigeria has a success rate similar to the chances of that lottery you just won in your email turning out to be real. |

Thanks, Josh. I have seen Shivers say he was reporting them quite a few times, that's why I asked.
I was sure the authorities in Nigeria have bigger fish to fry, but, maybe I fell for Shivers bait, lol. |

Welcome FourFlusher. As well as reading ongoing and completed baits may I also recommend our Stickies (at the top of each section of the forum) which contain a lot of useful and important information about the 'mechanics' of baiting. If you intend to try some baiting yourself then you can give yourself a good head start by learning the basic skills, most of which are explained in the Stickies. The #1 mistake made by unprepared newbie baiters is to go blasting into a bait and then finding it runs off into the ditch. I can also recommend our mentor programme (see Stickie ) where a more experienced baiter will be provided to help you through the initial stages of this highly addictive pastime. And please continue to ask questions! That's what the forum is here for. |

Thanks, Gnasher.
I have been reading the stickies. Some are very interesting, some are over my head right now.
I do intend to play with these guys for my own entertainment and hopefully to their detriment, but, I know I'm not ready to jump in yet.
It's been a long time since I've received a scam letter, but, from my reading it's not important because they probably have no idea who the sent them to, they just jump on the responses. |

Really? Do you have an example of where you have seen this? My experience has been that a noob may find someone who will teach him. The noob may be given a letter to send out and can ask his handler how to go about the scam. They may arrange that the person with more experience will handle the closing and the 'catcher' will get a cut.
Actually paying a wage is not very good for business if you think about it. An oga would have money going out with no return and no way to filter the good victims from the bad. |

Though getting a scammer arrested is a pinnacle of achievement for a baiter, we are commonly able to get the bank accounts they use for scamming closed and their fake web sites killed. Both cause the scammers cost and it disrupts their 'work'.
There is always the hope that bringing their accounts to the attention of the authorities will cause law enforcement to become actively involved. |

Reading threads, unfortunately, can give you erroneous information, unless you check the source. Some people like to appear as an expert even after a month here and will quote the wrong information and sound as though they know because they saw someone else say it who has been here for 2 months. I don't say I know everything and am always willing to learn what someone else knows if they can prove the statement. People still pass on the belief that lads have a level system and they report up a ladder like a business. Remember, this is the internet and assume everything you read is questionable. |
