New scambaiter here. I have been looking to purchase an item off of craigslist, and am pretty sure I caught a scammer...international location, 3rd party shipping, and a guarantee. Any word on TNT shipping, or if it is a legitimate company??? Also, any recommendations on starting a bait on this one, as the person is telling me to deal directly with that company>>>Thanks for the help guys.

Not sure how to make it a link, sorry still kinda new. If you want a little more background, this "lady" has just moved to UK and wants to sell her Plasma TV to me. The price is a little rediculous, so it started sending up red flags, then her email came and put me over the top. I took a peek at the shipping company. Not sure exactly what to look for, but no office or contact phone numbers that I could find.

That's a pretty insane URL. The http://overnightuktnt.com/ part redirects back to tnt.com.

So looks legit to me from that perspective.

Here was the original URL in the first email I was sent. The second email came from the same address, however the name on the account had been changed to a bunch of random letters: fukshau dksafi (the original had come from a "Pauline" Is there any way I can pick up on this if it is a scam? Also, how should I get my new friend Pauline hooked with this kind of scam?? Thanks again for the help guys.

But for your reference, go to http://www.whois.net and enter in the domain name. You'll get back quite a bit of information.

Look for creation date and details on who created the domain. Free email providers and recent creation dates are a pretty good clue that it's fake.

Don't tell them you know the site is fake. We can bring down sites like these quite easily so keep it pretty quiet.

Go check out that link I gave above, if you want to try to get the site shut down yourself, or someone else can do it for you. SlayerFaith will let you know about the best course of action, she's the expert on Fake Banks & other sites.

Edit: If this site is verified as fake (which I'm 99% sure it is) then would this thread be more appropriate in the Fake Banks & Sites section of the forum?

In the meantime I am going to do some homework on this scambaiting to see how I can get more involved. I'll admit, I very well could have lost several hundred if not thousands of dollars if I wouldn't have gotten the nose for trouble. Thanks for your help again. I'm also going to start trawling craigslist for suspicious prices...I'll get back with my findings. I don't want anyone to fall victim to what I almost did.

Good idea to have a good look around and get to know the whole scam-baiting process a bit better. You've come across what (seems to be) a fake scamming website which is one way you can hurt the scammers the most, by having the site shut down. I am guessing SF will post again here soon once she's poked around enough to ascertain whether she thinks it's a fake or real site. Then database entries can be made regarding the fake site at aa419.org (another reasonably similar site to this one).

After that you (or someone else if you're OK with it) can draft up a letter to the company who hosts the site and hopefully they'll end up taking it down. After all that you are allowed to have a nice flag in your signature for shutting down the site.

), and has a bonus office live domain being used for emails.

This one is likely to be a little more difficult to kill than the average lad site. The main site host does not have a great reputation when it comes to killing fakes, and the cloaking is likely to make it that much harder.

@redvsblue- you might want to concentrate on your bait and let an experienced site killer tackle the website. This isn't a dig at you, just an observation that this site is probably not a good choice for a first kill.

Slayerfaith, if this is a hard site to shut down, I wouldn't mind at all someone taking over shutting it down while I worked on the baiter. You wouldn't be stepping on my toes at all, since I am a beginner at all this. (Just give me an assist flag...haha) I did some reading on how to get this guy sending me stuff to fall into a trap, and I got some good ideas on how to start. As far as the shutdown of the site, you can take over on that, but I would like to know how it is going if you wouldnt mind keeping me posted on it. Get back and lemme know.

I set up my fake new email yesterday. I used gmail, as I read they were a good one to bait scammers on...My tv friend has a new interested buyer. I read all the safety tips...You would have to be pretty ignorant to actively go out and bait with real info. Its all fake...thanks for the tips Smile

@redvsblue I lack the technological savy of most baiters. So I can't look up registration information too easily, regardless of how many times people show me Embarassed

However, a rule of thumb when you are just checking out this types of sites is too look at the "contact us" page first. If they use free e-mails, list mobile phone numbers as their contact number, or don't list any contact numbers, that should make you suspcious.

Then, look at the "payment options page". Laughing

If you only see Western Union, Money Gram, and Wire Transfer as the payment options, get VERY suspicous.

Shiver Metimbers is a genius in his baiting techniques, and some of his stories had me laughing so hard the coworkers started staring... By the way, thanks for the warm welcome from everyone.
