One of my cats is in a crate right now. She's meowing and meowing and meowing. I rescued her from a shelter back in March. Since then, she's ruined a nice oriental rug (peeing) and started peeing on another rug. She's also peed in all of my bags/purses - - ruining a Liz Claiborne today - ruined a coach bag - ruined a Louis Vuitton (at least that one was fake). I have had it with this cat. I really hate to have to get rid of her, but I don't know what else to do. The cat is pissing everywhere and ruining everything. I cannot let her out anymore. |

Eliza, have you had her to the vet? Inappropriate elimination is almost always a symptom of either physical or emotional problems. The vet can rule out UTI or other medical issues.
For the emotional, what has changed? Cats act out to express displeasure, usually from a change in their environment that they don't like.
Also, only cat? Clean litterbox, I assume. If more than one cat, rule is one box per cat plus one. (yes, I know. But it works.)
(- have been owned by cats most of my life, now the proud servant of two.) |

Hmmm, now I'm wondering why that cat was in the shelter to begin with.
Now let me think ... |

She was on their kill list, and I felt sorry for her. Poor kitty.
I have her in a crate right now - I'll put her in the bathroom soon -I'm just so pissed (in the American sense). I chunked her in the crate. She'll have to stay in it. I'll let her live in the bathroom soon. She has NO medical problems - she's been to the vet.
I already had a cat when I felt sorry for her and brought her home. Now I am just frustrated.
Yes - I have 2 litter boxes plus 1. And I scoop immediately when they go and I am at home - on days I work - I scoop before I go to work and when I come home at night. |

@ Eliza_D, this article may be of interest: Clicky.

Her behaviour could be territorial (Clicky) and or a sexual response to the presence of your other cat if he is a tom or even a neutered tom.

My female cat went through a "phase" of peeing everywhere. It lasted for a few months. . . during that time the vet gave me (sold me) a pheremone spray to use around the house. It was supposed to relax the cat. I don't know that it worked 100%, but it helped and whatever the "stress" was. . . she got over it.
Meanwhile: to get cat pee smell out of stuff you can make a cheap mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide, baking soda and a drop of dish soap.
Dissolve baking soda in the peroxide until it is a saturated solution (no more will dissolve in) add a tiny drop of dish soap, then use it immediately. Completely saturate any area the cat pee was with the solution. It WILL take the smell out. (it might slightly bleach some fabrics, test small area first).
Good Luck! |

Cat is spayed.
Other cat is spayed.
Paid $50 for "Nature's Miracle" which removes the smell. Cat just goes in a different spot.
Again - - Damn cat (or roof rabbit) |

Hmmm, sounds like a territorial or ingrained behavioural thing A vet may offer more insight into the problem.
It can take some time for cats to become adjusted to their new home so perseverance is the key. If there is a favourite place for the cat to wee, you could try a container of vinegar or cloudy ammonia (commonly found in window cleaner) The container should not allow the cat to come into direct contact with the contents.
Naptha flakes or mothballs in a perforated metal or tough plastic container (snug fitting lid mandatory, poison) may also discourage the cat from re-using the same area. Perhaps mothballs or naptha flakes wrapped in tinfoil could be placed in handbags, pants pockets etc?
Litter trays should be located where any "accidents" are most easily cleaned up; a tiled bathroom is ideal. If possible, include a few toys, feed the cat and spend some time with the cat there.
Unfortunately, there are many cats (and dogs) that are abandoned for a variety of behavioural problems and sometimes these are not immediately obvious to prospective owners. Sometimes the animal shelter staff either don't know about the problem or neglect to pass the information on. Never impulsively buy a pet and ask to see how the prospective pet socialises with any existing pets (or children )
I don't like the last resort (returning the animal to the shelter), but another home where there is no "competition" with other pets might solve the problem.
Hope the cat problem can be sorted.
Edit: Sliced raw onions. A young former cat though she'd sniff a saucepan's contents and caught a whiff of raw onion that was just placed there to cook. Never happened again |

Ima mentioned pheremone spray. One brand is called Feliway and it also comes as a difuser like those fragrance diffusers that sit in a wall socket. Not a coverup but true pheremones, it's used to calm nervous cats. Lasts 30 days or so and certainly worth a try.
If you do decide to give the cat up, do try to find a "no-kill" shelter. |

Thanks guys. I'm trying everything.
If all else fails - I'll send her to my mom and dad's house. They have 87 acres of land, and the cat would be free to go in and out - - hardly ever any traffic near their home = probably would not get run over. |

Do you let your cats out Eliza or do they stay inside all of the time? |

I was just thinking, maybe she doesn't like being inside all of the time. If she was used to being outdoors, she will be getting stressed being locked up. |

A squirt gun is handy, but you have to catch them in the "Act". And you never do. Well, I'm sure that was a big help. tip toes out of topic. |
