Have you considered pointing out to the scammer that Douglas Adams died before he could complete the series, and that there is a certain fortune to be made if the lad can write a sequel which you (as Adams' publisher) will pretend to "discover"?

Nice idea Zen!

Still waiting for the last part. Problem is, this lad has to keep recording the audio on his laptop, which he then has to take around to his DJ friend to convert to MP3 for him. Then the audio gets burned to CD/DVD and then off he pops to the local Interbet cafe to upload. It's along, drawn-out process for him, which makes it all the better of course! He's promised me completion by tomorrow.

but doesn�t he know that ordinarily the experts use fine reel-to-reel recorders first?!??

Then go to a lab top friend who knows a DJ friend to convert it to mp3 then to an expert who knows how to insert a CD then to the electricity guy who cycles the dynamo then the lad nerd who knows how to burn thena running boy who takes the treasure CD to the cyber cafe then to hire the super super expert engineer who knows somebody to upload this thing (after some days of trying...)

^^^^^Sick computer so forgive me if this was mentioned before and I missed it, but Shiver you might consider getting the rights to sell a CD of the work from Adams' estate with the money going to defray the cost of running this place and to a charity of the Adams' family choosing?

I doubt I could afford it Dr. X, but that would be cool. Hopefully it could be something for the future. I've already asked about out of copyright books before, and there may well be a couple more scammers lined up willing to do some work Twisted Evil

^^^^^It may be something you can approach them with if it is purely for charitable reasons such as running what IS an educational site--HERE--and any charity they want. In my limited experience of getting rights to reprint materials, some are delighted and others are [CENSORED--Ed.]

In the United States, anything you publish is automatically Copyrighted indefinitely even if you don't apply for a copyright, and that probably goes Internationally. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Mr. Green

As a history major, I can attest to the fact that there are hundreds of books in the public domain(not copyrighted). I did a google search every time I got my list of required texts. I saved tons of money by downloading these off the internet. Although, I'm sure that not all the ones I downloaded were public domain.

Unfortunately, most of these books are on my old computer, but a simple google search can find a lot.

FINALLY! The last chapter has been delivered. I now have just under 500 megabytes of MP3 madness! I haven't totted up the length of speaking time, but I'll do that later today. I'm guessing at the speed he's reading it will be about 8 - 9 hours worth of audio Smile

I'll resample the files later today to try to get the sizes down to a more reasonable and downloadable size. The originals have been sampled at a rate of 44KHz and 192kbps which for simple voice audio is far too much. I should be able to reduce the file sizes by at least half, even more without any noticeable quality loss.

Copyrights expire after 75 years or so. All the classics are available for download by now. Try http://www.gutenberg.org for 20,000 free downloads.

Personally, I would love to hear a dramatic reading of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It's comparatively short, but gives lots of opportunities for dramatic expression.

If it's drama you're after MH then I would advise you not to ask my current scammer to do any jobs for you. I've listend to this guy read through the entire HHGTTG book now, and dramatic he ain't!

Another teaser for you all. Resampling/encoding these files is taking a long time, so to keep you all happy (for a short while at least!) I've uploaded chapter one HERE as zipped MP3 file so it can be downloaded for those of you who don't want to sit around waiting for a 16 meg file to play online Smile

I've now totted up the total time of the entire recording and it comes out at just over 8 hours recorded book reading - lovely!

I'll be uploading the entire recordings along with the in-progress bait in the next few hours.

Also, I thought you might like to have an early look at Ken's signed "release form", signing the work over to me. It's nothing to look at, but it gives him something more to do (name partially removed to protect this in-progress bait!):

OK, I've uploaded a zip file containing the complete HHGTTG chapters in MP3 format (1 to 35 plus the introduction). You can download it from megaupload.com AT THIS LINK.

The zip file is 223 meg so those of you with a slow connection be prepared for a long wait. Anyone brave enough to want to attempt to listen all the way though, make yourselves comfy as there's over 8 hours to get through!

The current in-progress bait will be published soon. I got a little sidetracked this evening, but I hope to have it on-line in the next 24 hours.
