. . . . . make a lad in Africa get a tattoo, I didn't, but was wondering is it not dangerous for the lad? . . . |
Yes, of course it is dangerous.
Here, in my first paragraph below, is part of a European Union discussion document.
The following two paragraphs are not part of that discussion document but were written by me to illustrate a point.
A gruesome list of illnesses and health problems contracted by people who have had tattoos includes viral infections such as hepatitis, HIV, bacterial and fungal infections, allergic reactions such as skin irritation, and malignant lesions such as melanoma, leprosy and other devastating diseases. Other problems associated with body art were toxic shock syndrome, tetanus, venereal ulcers, tuberculosis and a host of skin diseases.
A gruesome list of health problems contracted by people crossing the road to get to a Western Union office or internet caf includes death, serious disfigurement, amputated or broken limbs, cuts, abrasions and other devastating injuries. Other problems associated with untreated road injuries include viral infections such as hepatitis, HIV, bacterial and fungal infections, allergic reactions such as skin irritation, and malignant lesions such as melanoma, leprosy and other devastating diseases including toxic shock syndrome, tetanus, venereal ulcers, tuberculosis and a host of skin diseases.
A gruesome list of health problems contracted by internet scammers spending long periods using electrical equipment such as computers, scanners, printers etc. includes death by electrocution, repetitive strain injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, eye strain, glaucoma, blood clots, etc. Other problems associated with computer use include cuts and breaks to fingers when trapped in working pasts of, for example, printers, which may turn septic if not treated and lead to viral infections such as hepatitis, HIV, bacterial and fungal infections, allergic reactions such as skin irritation, and malignant lesions such as melanoma, leprosy and other devastating diseases including toxic shock syndrome, tetanus, venereal ulcers, tuberculosis and a host of skin diseases.

This is not fair. |
For you; a little poem without comment from me.
Life Is Not Always Fair
Life is not always fair,
It will have its ups and downs,
And the good times and the bad.
Life can be exciting and filled with joy,
Or life can be hard and filled with fright.
Life can be filled with many feelings,
The feelings could be confusing at times,
And at other times be clear.
Life will include many decisions,
And some will be major,
But most will be minor.
The decisions made during your life
Will take you down many paths.
The pathway of life you choose to take,
Will determine whether
Or not you will have
A good or bad life.
The decisions you make will
Carve your future and
The decisions you make can
Either help you or hurt you.
To quote the urban myth often, and incorrectly, attributed to Bill Gates:
"Life is not fair - Get used to it".
You can choose to be a scammer, scambaiter, scam victim or neither. The choice is yours. If you are not prepared to accept the dangers of your choice and the effect that will have on others then make another. |

^^^^See, now If I had bet that no one did, my husband would be short a nut.
For Breddan's poem, it reminds me of a line from a TV show that I absolutely love.
Quote: |
"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." |

As far as I know no baiter has ever taken a bound and gagged lad kicking and screaming to a tattoo parlour. They to it voluntarily and they choose to go ahead and do it because their venality and greed (and have you noticed that 99% of tattoo lads think they are ripping off a church and/or charity?) are far greater motivators than their concerns about the possible health risks to themselves or their families. My conscience is clear. Having said that, despite the impression you may get from our trophy pics, getting a lad to go ahead and get a tattoo is very difficult and happens rarely. Most of them draw the line before they take that step (as do many baiters) and that's OK too. |

Ok, here's a challenge...
Name ONE documented case of a person contracting the HIV virus from a tattoo.
Just ONE.
And.....Go. |

^^^^How small person's cough?
Searching, there are some hilarious claims from a fundamentalist website that does not know the difference between bacteria and vira, and quotes Pamela Anderson as an authority.
Nevertheless, while the CDC lists the risk if one does not use sterile instruments, they do not list a case.
I could not find a single reported case in the literature. One interesting report tested the prevalence between having a tattoo and a transfusion transmissible disease [TTD--Ed.]:
Quote: |
No statistically significant associations were found between tattooing and HBV or HIV infection, syphilis or Chagas' disease, but these results are inconclusive given the large CI [Confidence interval.--Ed.] obtained.
Tattooing and transfusion-transmitted diseases in Brazil: a hospital-based cross-sectional matched study. |
Curiously, there is this claim from a German article:
Quote: |
There are many reports on wound infections as well as transmission of hepatitis and human immunodeficiency viruses etc.
Tattooing and body piercing--experiences from public health infection surveillance by a public health office |
unfortunately, I do not have the article and my searches find none of these "many reports."
Not the single one.

^^^Hey JD, she's good, thanks for asking.
There is not ONE documented case for HIV through tattoos. Trust me, I know this. I have 3 very close friends who are HIV positive and one very close friend who's an advisor. I could go on for months about this, but choose not to. I just reiterate my sentence. Not one documented case of a person contracting the HIV virus through a tattoo needle.Any website that can quote Pammy as an authority...well...unless it's a website in how to get publicity, hasn't got a clue.
Although to be fair, I quite like Pammy. Just not as a medical authority! |

Well . . . to be fair to Pamela, I doubt the crackpot site I found quote her accurately--they fail miserably on a lot of other points. I am not bothering to link it, because it adds nothing other than to demonstrate the ravages of willful ignorance.
Anyways, IF there was a case, it would be reportable. HIV is a reportable illness in the US, and the CDC--which has guidelines--would cite it if it existed.
So . . . I think that just about kills the main reason for the ethical discussion.

Is that the same crackpot site that said "drug-users, criminals, rock artists, deviants and homosexuals" are the people that are the "many customers" of tattoo parlours, and are the major carriers of "deadly blood-borne diseases"?
After reading that I suddenly realised the real motivation behind the site and went off to find my salt shaker.
I love how they fail to mention that most tattooist these days use disposables. |

With respect and apologies to Breddan, he could well have added:
A gruesome list of illnesses and health problems contracted by victims of 419 scammers include death, serious disfigurement, amputated or broken limbs, 3rd degree burns, severe lacerations, contusions, concussion, massive head injuries, and other devastating injuries. Loss of money to 419 scammers can cause severe depression, leading to other effects including arrest, imprisonment, divorce, and suicide.

As many others have said, do what you're comfortable with. No one will criticize you for drawing your own ethical lines; that's between you and whatever passes for your moral compass. (And, in certain cases, the authorities, I suppose.) |

Leprosy would be really cool. We need a new sig icon for giving a lad leprosy thru a tattoo. A judgment of Biblical proportions indeed! |

... hmm don't like the idea of infecting them with needles... I wonder if that whole scarification thing would be safer then? At least the piece doing the scarification is heated up like a cattle brand and probably very sanitary at that point due to the heat. Any secondary infections after the branding is their own fault for not sterilizing their nice little scar. |

I have got several lads to tattoo themselves. Every time they are convinced they are getting to rip off a charitable church that wants to provide university scholarships to needy people.
Charming, isn't it |

They freezebrand these days. Its placed on Dry ice. The process causes the skin to change to, and the hair to grow back in, a different colour. The skin is not broken at all.

^^^^^Does he know he was baited? Just out of curiosity.
At first, I figured--when reading Shiv and other's baits that involved a tattoo--that a "burn" would be fantastic and all of that. However, it seems to me it is a bit crueler if they think THEY caused a "golden opportunity" to get away or something else--like the "priest" absconding with the scholarship funds--that the tattoo forever reminds them of.

I often worry that my lad will be hit by a car when crossing the street in his attempt to get to the WU office.
I always encourage my lads to travel with a 'crossing buddy' and to look both ways before stepping off of the sidewalk and out into traffic.
I wouldn't be able to sleep or meet the eyes of my Pastor, otherwise.
'Shiv' (because that's what those of us in the know call him) may have told me something similar via PM, but I'll have to check. |
