Is there any way you guys could string a possible victim along to keep him busy enough to keep him away from real scammers? |
Baiting victims. Now here's a novel concept. Keep them coming, checknomore. |

If you ever get in touch with a victim tell them what's going on AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. What use is there in stringing them along compared to telling them that they're being scammed? |

Here the thing,'right now he is not being scammed, but the last time I told he was being scammed, he took that as me being mean so he gotten all quiet on me.
Plus he will not listen any way.
There are a couple ways this could work.
PM me if you are interested.
I gotta go. |

"Baiting" a victim works about as well as beating and robbing your friends to teach them not to walk through dangerous neighborhoods.
He's a grown man, and unless you are or could become (by petitioning the court to rule him incompetent or something similar) his legal guardian, you cannot make him do/see/understand anything. If that isn't an option, you're pretty much left with the "tough love" approach.
Presumably, you're worried about him possibly costing you money or doing something legally risky like having fake checks mailed to your address, or similar. Spell it out, crystal clear, that you will not (or will no longer) bail him out of the scams he gets himself into, and if it comes down to something legally dodgy, you and the rest of your family will quite happily cooperate with the police and testify as to his long history of getting himself involved in such things. Any packages or merchandise that arrives for him at your address will be refused at delivery or immediately turned over to the police in case he's gotten himself involved in a mule scam, etcetera, etcetera.
And personally, if it were me, I would also say that since he ignores my opinion, it will no longer be given. Then stick to it. I find that for some people, if you treat your opinion as something to be given only to people who value it, they start listening.
However, there are some people who will always disagree with facts they don't like and call them a crock. Even in the face of solid evidence.
Speaking of evidence, the New Zealand Inland Revenue very much agrees that the tax rate can be as high as 39% on any income over $60,000 in a single year.

Thanks for that mrsbean. I'm not sure whether he struggled to believe the highest tax rate was that high, or that low? I actually think as a highest tax rate it's quite low by international standards, but generally highest tax rates only take effect much much higher than $60,000 a year.
Yeah I know we're now talking about tax, but surely it's better than what this topic was about before, and we are in the "general chat" section. |

As for the SSN being compromised, immediately order your credit report from all 3 agencies. Go to www.ftc.gov to get the link to the free credit report site. Check these out make sure there is not any thing on them that you don't know about. If you have a good relationship with your bank they may review it for you and help you read it.
Advise all 3 CB's to put a fraud alert on your report. This will cause a pain in the ass for you when you go to obtain new credit, but it will help stop the ID thief from opening credit in your name.
There are services out there that offer monitoring for a fee. They will e-mail you every time your credit report is changed. You can then determine if you knew about it (i.e. credit card opened and you just opened one okay!)... don't know how reliable they are, but you might want to check them out.
We were in this position when ABN AMRO (one of the largest mortgage servicing companies in the US) lost a data tape containing millions of customers and their info.
Tape was later found and determined not to be tampered with... I still monitor my credit report. |
