Dumb question about YIM

I hope this is the right place to post this question. I usually sign on to YIM as invisible to everyone. I've noticed that when I choose to appear online to someone, all of a sudden, I appear online to half my buddy list. Does this mean they are all the same person with different usernames?

I think the position is that you cannot appear as online to some and invisible to others, so if you go online, all your contacts can see you. The ones appearing in your list with an orange face are those who are also online.

No doubt someone will step in if I am wrong or explaining badly. Smile

You don't need Yahoo to sneak into YIM; Trillian will do it too and "see" you even when you want to be hidden. It will also "see" Skype users no matter their status and there are more programs like it.

With the newer versions of YIM you can appear as online to some and invisible to others. You have to right-click everyone in your contact list to set them to appear "permanently invisible" for this user. If you just go online as "invisible to everyone" this will sometimes muddle up if there are connection or server errors, ending up in you being visible to everyone but those manually set to "appear permanently invisible".

Yazak is a neat program for Yahoo chatting, especially for accessing rooms instead of peer-to-peer chat. But my favourite is Gaim, now named Pidgin. Excellent tool for managing all your YIM, MSN, AOL, Skype etc. contacts!
