I am a traditional longbow archer and I have a few years of experience under my belt and I also do competition too.

Compounds, interesting as I did have one for a while but the fun was not there for me in the compound Wink

Practice, practice and practice some more. I hunt every year with a bow, and it's great fun. Find a location where the county or fish & game set up blood tracking locations as well. Once you make the shot, you need to be able to find your kill. Wink

Drew,

I try to get out with my bow a couple times a year. I think it's the most sporting way to hunt that there is. Last year I got a couple of turkeys and a deer.

The most scared I've ever been in my life wasn't in combat or jumping out of airplanes. It was a few years ago when I made a bad shot at my first black bear. I just pissed him off and I didn't have a sidearm. I got lucky and he didn't come after me. I was able to take a second shot that was on the mark.

i`m trying to find a sport thats more quiet than shotgun hunting. (hunting with a bow is illegal here)
i dont know why that is -we are aloud to hunt most things with an airgun at 12 ftlbs, and a bow can kick out 50 +

i`m planning on starting on the field archery, hitting pictures on haybales.

i prefer skill based shooting other than lenses. (if you know what i mean)

I used to make my own crossbows. Da*ned things were powerful and accurate. You don't need a compound bow, you need a leaf spring from a pickup truck and a good winch. Slow second shot, though.

thanks for your replies guys. i`ve looked around and will look to get a bow soon. there is alot to read up on. also the arrow type and pull lenth and all other technical crap (or jarggon)

i`ve seen deliverance. a j. boorman film. also check out `point blank`.

For the new archer the best thing is to have a pro set up your bow. It's critical draw length is precise so you can achieve a consistent and comfortable anchor point.

I use a release [not a finger shooter] and anchor my index finger knuckle behind my ear lobe.

If you can have a pro watch you shoot and help out with form you will get better much quicker.

When I started I joined a local league. Some members when national team. some of those guys were splitting arrows at 20 metres. Razz
