computor hard drive advice needed plz

i bought a lap top just after christmas with a 80gb hard drive.now ive used 55gb of it.
how can i check were all the usage has gone too.
downloaded files combined gb is only 10.
i know 5gb is taken up on the HD as a back up feature.

program file folder is only 2gb

has anyone else experience this?

my desktop has a 60gb HD and i still have 20gb left on that and its not been reformatted once in the 7 years ive had it.
i was choice in the programs i put on the laptop to prevent me clogging up the memory
any clues or advice

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/View-Folder--Size-Pro.shtml will give you a graphical representation of how much space each folder takes up. It's a 14 day trial version. Find out where the offending folders are, then we can offer more advice.

edit:did that last week,got none left now

documents and settings folder is 20gb

Shocked

will work through it all and see WTF going on.

- your "my documents" folder is default in there in your profile

that piece of kit is the biz.ive got duplicates of certain large files.
this has shown me were they all are and will spend time viewing and reviewing them tomorrow now(still got no porn!!!)

Personally I use THIS but figured something that showed it as a graph would be simpler. I'm definately giving that other program a go as well though.

but I would go into options and untick the 'Delete cookies' box, otherwise you will be asked for all your passwords again at websites.

And I tick the 'Delete prefetch' box and turns the sounds off.

There is another thing to remember about hard drives. There is a difference between the stated and actual sizes of them. Once formated, the drive is actually smaller than the stated size. For instance, my 250gb drive may only really have space for 220gb once formated. I believe it has to do with the difference between decimal and binary counts of the space.

I found this on the web: 80 GB (decimal size) = 74.51 GB (binary size) = 76293.95 MB (binary) of useable space. That would explain a good chunk.

Go to Download.com and get CCleaner. Do not get look alikes. CCleaner is free and devoid of spyware.

Run it.
While you are at it, fix your registry issues. Just tick the box on the left. Our work MIS people hate it. They don't allow it on work machines but I notice that its on their computers right on the desktop.

I been asked to look at people's slow computers. Once the disk is 96% full, its really bad. At that point, you have to go in and manually delete all the temp files just to allow the system to work.

CCleaner usually takes less than a second to run. I once ran it on a system with 55 gigs of crap and it took 4 minutes.

One question. Did the laptop come with recovery disks or does it have a partition on the hard disk drive? That kind of crap takes a lot of space too.

I was having the same problems you are experiencing. What I found was that Kapersky Anti Virus which I was using had grown to a 30 GB file with all its logging and reports. I had only been using it for 15 days of the free trial. I went back to AVG and havent had a problem since.

Everything you download is stored in a TEMP folder and most of the application related stuff is not deleted when you clear cache so I'd recommend going in there and getting rid of stuff you already have loaded. That will free up a fair bit of space. That's also the default location for storing documents that are auto-saved.

If you don't get recovery disks with a new computer pick up a disk replicator like Norton Ghost or Trueimage.

Years ago I tried to get a new HD for clients from Dell. The Rep informed me that we would need to repurchase all of the software at list price thus exceeding the price of a new laptop by a few hundred dollars!
