I was just reading, in a local newspaper, the annual RCMP report for a small community of 10,000 people.

Thirty seven fraud files were opened last year as compared to 33 in 2005 and only 21 in 2004.
"Organized crime continues to use computers and the Internet in an attempt to defraud local residents by sending letters such as a Nigerian letter," Bigland stated in his report.
Police continue to alert the public about fraud scams through the media and public presentations.

It seems the lads have a pretty high success rate. I had no idea. This number only reflects the scams that were reported and none of the on going ones.

I'd guess that a massive number of people never even report being scammed out of sheer embarasment. IMHO the police need to do more to highlight the various email scams as in the UK I've seen virtually no mention of it.
