Got this e-mail shortly after getting a reply from a lad. Oh, well!!

Quote:
Dear Friend,

WARNING: You are being scammed by Samuel Robertson

Scammers email address is: [email protected]

THIEVES ARE TRYING TO STEAL YOUR MONEY!!

FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS EMAIL!

I am part of a large group of people who try to keep internet crooks
from stealing money through scam emails.

An informant has told us that a scammer is sending emails to you.
This thief is trying to steal your money by Advance Fee Fraud, also
known as a 419 Scam. The money they have promised you is not real!!

PLEASE, DO NOT SEND THIS LETTER TO THE SCAMMERS, AND DO NOT TELL THEM
THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

This would keep us from warning other good people, and might put our
informants in danger!

There are many kinds of 419 scams, but most will say things like:
*The scammer will share millions of dollars with you, if you help
them move the money out of their country.

*You will get an email saying that you won a lottery that you didn't
buy a ticket for
*The scam is about a dead person's bank account.
*They may ask you to set up a bank account to get money.
*They will ask for your name, address, and phone number.
*They will usually set you up with a lawyer, or 'barrister' who will
handle the paperwork
*They will send you "official paperwork" and certificates to prove
that the money is real. These are all fake.
*They will want you to send money for 'fees'. A fee for papers, a fee
for the transfer, the lawyers fee, more feesetcetc.

*They may offer you a "loan" to pay the fees. The check or money order
they will send you is fake, even if your bank cashes the check or
tells you that it "cleared"!!!! The bank will find out in a few days or
weeks that the check is fake, and will make you pay all of the money
back, even the money you sent to the scammer. The bank might even have
you arrested for cashing a bad check.

The money the thieves promise you isn't real. When you have sent them
all of your money, they will be gone.

To learn about email crime and 419 scams, please go to these sites:
http://www.secretservice.gov/alert419.shtml
http://www.met.police.uk/fraudalert/419.htm

I ask you to do these things:

1. DO NOT SEND THIS LETTER TO THE SCAMMERS, AND DO NOT TELL THEM THAT
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Our informants could be hurt or killed if you
tell the scammers that they are being watched! These people risk their
safety in order to get us the information needed to keep people from
being scammed.

2. Please stop mailing and talking to with these crooks now. Do not
answer e-mails, and do not talk to them on the phone. Do not ask
them if they are trying to steal your money. What do you think thieves
will say? They will only send you more lies so you will send them your
money.

3. DO NOT send him any money, and NEVER go to meet them! Victims of
419 scams who travel to meet the scammers have been kidnapped, held
for ransom, and sometimes killed!

4. DO NOT try to confront, abuse, or argue with these scammers, as
they may already have your name and address.

5. Please send me an e-mail letting me know that you have stopped
talking with these thieves.

If you doubt the truth of this warning, please print out a copy of
this email, and any emails that you have gotten from this scammer,
and take them to your local police. They will tell you the truth
about this scam.

Sincerely

John Nord

Hardly.

That's a bona fide victim warning. Someone must have received an email with your baiting email addy in the CC field. They probably turned it over to one of our mods, hence the warning.

Just reply "I'm a scambaiter, thank you," and everything will be just fine.

Well, if it isn't my good friend sammy. As KD said, just reply to the warning saying you're a baiter.

I just got this little gem from our lad, it appears he may be having a breakdown. So don't do anything to him that might touch a nerve. Twisted Evil

Hmmm....did anyone else notice how particular the writer of the email was about saying "don't talk to these guys" and such? This "warning" MAY be from a scammer trying to stop scambaiters from scambaiting!
...or mayber I'm just paranoid. Very Happy

I read that and see a scammer, not a legit scam stopper.

My reasons:

1. An 'informant' told them about it. Not really what I would expect them to call it.

2. They want the supposed victim to contact them to let them know thta they have stopped emailing the scammer

3. Look at that email address. That looks exactly ike half of the scammers addresses that we get emailed from.

I think you shouldn't tell them that you are a scam baiter. Send them a message to say thanks, and then see what they do. Then we'll know for sure.

Foss,
Please be assured that it is a genuine warning sent to a potential victim.

A nice simple reply "Thanks, I am a baiter" would be just the ticket.

What is the problem here? Mugus do not warn of scams, they do not "test" and after a few high-ranking and long-standing members have replied to the original question with a confirmation of this warning do we really have to discuss this any further?

Victim warning is another very important part of the fight against 419 and there are a few very legitimate organizations at it. Quite a few members of 419Eater.com are members of such sites. After KD, JC and SF gave their advice why don't you new folks simply accept that they know what they're talking about and heed their advice?

Ahh.. right. Love the tone there Don.

God i get sick of people acting all high and mighty in here because they have been around for a while. God forbid that someone should offer their bloody opinion in here who haven't made a couple of thousand posts first.

As an aside, thanks Breddan. I just found it strange that legitimate sites would use terms that sound more like lads than they do by people trying to prevent lads scamming. I think they could make that same post a whole lot smaller and more useful.

I don't care how many posts someone makes as long as they put some effort into their posts and the following observation isn't limited to message boards at all: If a number of long term members at a certain activity (call them experts or "people who know what they're talking about" if you like) respond to a question with an advice that doesn't exactly leave much room for imagination then I assume that this question is answered, whether they gave all their reasons behind that answer or not.

Questioning their combined judgment after 3 posts giving the same advice is maybe "a bloody opinion", but it just isn't the same as giving a "bloody opinion" in some postwhore thread. While I always appreciate new thinking we don't want to overlook the fact that sometimes there is simply stuff to be learned by listening to people who have dealt with this activity for a long time. We have all noticed that you tend to re-question things that have been established by our community years ago (re: ethics thread) but re-inventing the wheel every couple of weeks isn't always the way forward.

Victim warning is a huge effort by many people and maybe the most effective approach to fighting 419. People who don't respond to them will create more work and effort because a case cannot be closed unless the victim has gotten the message or is marked as a baiter. So answering with a simple "thank you" helps the people sending those warnings in their free time and there is zero chance to spoil a bait or something.

Again those scam letters are the results of hundreds of people dealing with victim warnings for many years. Those warnings have evolved and have proven their effectivity in many thousands of cases. But of course you have solid advice on how to improve them after you read the first warning of your life.

I personally wouldn't give a damn about people having different opinions but this is a working board and we are dealing with online criminals. As such this community has agreed on a few very effective measures. Whereas in baiting you are more or less free to do and think whatever you want in this very case the OP's question has been answered in the only possible way.

Foss, postcount doesn't matter.

We have long term respected members here, and members with high postcounts.

Sometimes they happen to be one and the same; many times they aren't.

Long term respected members = Subject Matter Experts
People that just have high post counts= People who post a lot, but may or may not know what the hell they're talking about.

In this case, several long term respected members who happen to know what they are talking about, all explained that this email was a legitimate warning.

It isn't a matter of anyone acting high and mighty. It is a matter of people who know what they are talking about giving advice based on experience being ignored while other members continue expressing their conspiracy theories and giving bad advice.

I received a letter like that in one of my baiting accounts a few months ago.
When I replied to it, I found out it was from another baiter. We boxed around for a while as I was suspicious at first, but after a few emails I knew that he was definitely not a scammer.

I was also confused as to how he managed to get hold of me, but later discovered that the lad had left all the recipients of his scam letter in his .cc list.

It's important to differentiate between a warning and a lad-warning. A lad warning will say something like: "Beware -- there are fraudstars on the internets. So only trust me as I am the Interpol and I will help you avoid them and get your money back."

A valid warning will provide ample valid language to show you the error of your ways, but importantly, the author will not ask for anything in return.

I got a 'warning' the other day. Wasn't too convinced for some reason.

ATTN:
this is not one of the popular jingo that has to do with 'you have won a lottery-Lotto scam' 'Represent our company-cashiers check scam' 'Business proposal deal -All in the way to make you fork out an upfront fee€™. Nigeria as you well know is the den for evil perpetrators
which are well classified by the dictionary to as scammers.

Permit me to introduce our establishment to you if this
letter concerns your interest, the financial crime outburst in collaboration
with the Nigerian finance security commission is out with an aim to make back refunds to the victims of the society and oversea whom has in one way fell a victim of the advance fee fraud so far since either presently or in the past.

We had a surveillance on cyber cafes and made a scrutiny on
account holders of young stars (who are particularly the initiators
of this web scam). We have in our custody arrested youth over hundreds
and confession stories of how various innocent people oversea
particularly USA society are being defrauded on daily basis.

Our aim on this is that the Nigerian government is trying to
create a restoration of the countryaaso image on the internet by
making back refunds to victims to make a sustainable development of the .
This letter however is a calling out to victims whom have
lost monies no matter how small or large ( this would be paid and doubled
up) after due processing irrespective of where they got you on the scam,
they could approach you with a deal from United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Nigeria....
but they are certainly from Nigeria. The lines which they communicate with
you from are tapped diverted lines. This is to say that every scam has its
root from NIGERIA.

Like I did explain above, if you wish to receive your hard
earned money back (doubled up) or you have a close colleague who was
victimized, kindly send us such information with proof of transaction details
you have with these con men to enable necessary proceedings. But if you
have never been scammed you could contact us for internet web advises on
tractions which you are currently having at the moment, this puts you on
safe grounds.

@Rodus
Image Image Image

So-called "warnings" sent by lads usually look pretty much just like that.

@Foss- here is one thing that you will NEVER see in a ladmail:
Quote:
If you doubt the truth of this warning, please print out a copy of
this email, and any emails that you have gotten from this scammer,
and take them to your local police.

Has anyone checked the email header to find out where it came from? I know that is not always conclusive but it might give a clue. (unless it was gmail etc).

Reading the mail, I tend to agree that its a genuine warning. The english is too good for a lad.
There seems to be no benefit to a scammer from sending this out.

My advice is to either ignore it or at most just reply with a thank you and leave it at that.
