I found a Nigerian letter with a check for $5000 my parents got back in 1975. I thought this scam didn't get going until the 1990's, anybody know what the oldest letter is?
Anybody have auto reply scambaiting software? |

I first saw the scam in a snail mail I received in the early 1990s. I have heard that this was called the "Mexican letter" in the 1950s, but haven't found evidence to back it up. The "Spanish prisoner" scam dates to the 16th century:

And who knows, if you go back far enough there's probably a "Babylonian letter" and a "Hittite Prisoner" scam. |
